Fire Rescue International (FRI) — Alberta's only not-for-profit, 911-responding fire rescue
organization — is seeking a professionally capable Accounting Clerk / Bookkeeper who wants more
than a desk job.
This role is designed for someone who can run the books competently and independently from Day One,
and who wants to build a second, equally meaningful career in emergency response and fire service
leadership.
If you can do our books, we can teach you how to be a first responder.
YOUR PROFESSION COMES FIRST — EMERGENCY SERVICE IS THE GROWTH PATH
This is not an entry-level accounting position.
You will be hired because you are already capable of:
- Performing full-cycle bookkeeping Working fluently in Sage.
- Managing reconciliations, AP/AR, payroll coordination, and reporting.
- Exercising sound professional judgement.
- Operating with minimal supervision.
In parallel, you will enter a structured, fully paid firefighter and medical responder
development pathway.
Over time, this role progresses deliberately from:
Accounting Clerk / Bookkeeper → Bookkeeper & Firefighter / Medic → Fire Service
Leader
Advancement into leadership and officer roles is earned through performance,
training, and commitment.
COMPENSATION & PROGRESSION:
- Year 1 Salary: $52,450.00.
- Year 5 Salary: $62,400.00.
This includes:
- Full-time, permanent employment from Day One.

Firefighter and medical training occurs primarily during evenings and weekends, allowing you to remain fully productive in your accounting role during regular business hours.
WHAT WE PROVIDE (FIRE & MEDICAL TRAINING – 100% PAID)
FRI will provide all emergency services training at no cost, including:
Firefighting Operations:
- NFPA 1001 – Level I.
- NFPA 1001 – Level II.
- NFPA 1140 – Wildland / Urban Interface Firefighting.
- NFPA 1070 – Hazmat Awareness.
- NFPA 1070 – Hazmat Operations.
- Class 3Q Alberta Driver's License.
- NFPA 1002 – Driver.
- NFPA 1002 – Pump / Operator.
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
- ICS 100.
- ICS 200.
- ICS 300.
- NFPA 1521 – Health & Safety Officer.
- NFPA 1521 – Incident Safety Officer.
- NFPA 1041 – Instructor Level I.
- NFPA 1041 – Instructor Level II.
- NFPA 1021 – Officer Level I.
- NFPA 1021 – Officer Level II.
All tuition, books, licensing, and exams are paid by FRI.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
(Professional-First, Reasonable & Defensible)
Candidates must arrive professionally capable of performing the bookkeeping function independently.
Mandatory (one of the following):
- Accounting Certificate or Diploma (NAIT, SAIT, college, university continuing education, or equivalent).
- Minimum 3 years of practical bookkeeping or accounting clerk experience, including full-cycle bookkeeping.
- Fluency in Sage (50 / 100 / 300).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Payroll experience or payroll coursework.
- Experience in not-for-profit or multi-entity accounting.
- Post-secondary coursework in accounting, finance, or business administration.
