About the Role:

The Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical controls systems and instrumentation within the manufacturing facility. This role supports plant operations by ensuring that automated equipment and systems operate safely, efficiently and reliably. The Controls Technician collaborates with engineering, maintenance, process and production teams to diagnose issues, implement solutions, and support continuous improvement activities.



Responsibilities
  • Modify, troubleshoot, and support Programmable Logic Controllers, Human-Machine Interfaces, and related automation software.
  • Download, upload and document code changes to support equipment operation or improvement.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and control system faults on production, facility, and environmental control equipment, including sensors, relays, VFDs, safety circuits and instrumentation.
  • Assist with the installation and commissioning of new equipment, control panels, and system upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes and company safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of control systems, including electrical schematics, PLC/HMI code backups, and equipment configuration settings.
  • Support change management and version control for automation software.
  • Respond to downtime events, troubleshoot electrical and controls-related issues, and provide technical support to maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to drive root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to identify and implement control system improvements that enhance reliability, safety, and efficiency.
  • Recommend and implement upgrades or modifications to improve system performance.
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and adhere to all plant safety policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure controls systems meet OSHA, NEC, and NFPA standards.
  • Provide training and guidance to technicians and operators on proper use and basic troubleshooting of automated systems.
  • Drive the highest level of employee retention and engagement to ensure a sustainable workforce.

Qualifications

Education: 

  • Must meet qualifications/requirements for Mechanic and/or Multi-Craft.
  • Formal training in digital electronics or microprocessor controls with industrial electronics background.
  • Experience in automated control systems including, but not limited to, design and programming PLCs, HMIs, and VF drives.
  • Proficient with ladder logic programming with Rockwell PC applications such as RS Linx, RS NetWorx and RS Logix 5, 500, and 5000.
  • Must be familiar with Allen Bradley Panelbuilder 32 and RS View development HMI applications.
  • Must have experience with VF drives, specifically AB drives.
  • Must be proficient with PLC networking configurations for Ethernet, DeviceNet, DH+, DF1.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word and Excel, and have a familiarity with AutoCad.
  • Experience with Siemans PLCs and HMIs

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 and up to 7-10 years maintenance experience working with a variety of mechanical equipment in a heavy industrial environment; knowledge of basic PLC, controls, arc flash, national electrical regulations, high voltage, pneumatics, hydraulics, rotating machinery, pumps, pipe fitting, welding and fabrication.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to observe safety and security procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions and use equipment and materials properly
  • Ability to sufficiently read, write, and understand English
  • Ability to exhibit sound and accurate judgement, and include appropriate people in decision-making process
  • Ability to count and perform basic math functions, including mental calculation of simple equations and/or fractions
  • Ability to adhere to guidelines set forth in the Employee Handbook and follow ISO and management / departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to use time efficiently and complete work in a timely manner
  • Ability to monitor own work to ensure quality and continuously looks for ways to improve and promote quality
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and develop alternative solutions
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and uphold organizational values
  • Ability to report to work on time and work all hours required of the job, including mandatory overtime; may be required to occasionally cover shifts other than the one for which hired
  • Understands the impact of energy usage and assist the company in conserving resources and energy at all times.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe use of shop equipment and tools
  • Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, rotating machinery, pumps, pipe fitting, welding and fabrication
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
