Job Description Summary:

As part of its core mission, the NSF NCAR Library delivers expert information services in support of the advancement of Earth system science. The Software Engineer III provides consulting on Library software tools and platforms, and direct software engineering support for special Library projects.

The Software Engineer III also provides expertise and support for other Library technical staff who are conducting software development, and acts as an advisor to management and colleagues on advanced technical applications.

What You Will Do
Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Consulting:

  • Provide expertise on software engineering for Library tools and applications, to enable the Library to optimally leverage existing code, and other software libraries and packages.
  • Support other Library technical staff in understanding and use of specific Library software
  • Provide training for Library technical staff, primarily on Library software tools written in the Python programming language

Special software engineering projects:

  • Develop software tools for Library and Archives data processing and presentation special projects
  • Assist with other software engineering projects as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer-related field and extensive and progressive relevant experience, which is typically gained by eight to twelve years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to convey complex concepts to others of various technical and non-technical backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate with the work of others.
  • Advanced skill developing software in Python, PHP, and other common programming languages.
  • Advanced skill in applying software analysis, design, and development methodologies.
  • Experience developing software in a library environment.
