Overview
The Principal Design Engineer will be responsible for managing and leading projects, with a thorough understanding of managing project delivery to quality, cost and programme deliverables. The role involves managing and delivering single- and/or multi-disciplinary projects to cost, schedule and quality criteria, leading aspects of infrastructure design, and acting as lead designer on a range of project sizes. The Principal Design Engineer is a key member of the Design Management team, assisting the Design Manager to ensure technical compliance, quality and successful delivery of a portfolio of design projects. You will generate primary designs and, with other Omexom engineers, convert these designs into working drawings as part of a wider design team. The role requires knowledge of industry legislation and the ability to implement it as required. You will work with initiative, supervise design and graduate engineers and trainees, and provide appropriate levels of primary design across a range of primary elements as required by the BUGM and their reports. You will contribute to the development of staff from graduates to principal designers, and participate in training schemes as required. Responsibilities
Day to day management of a design team Undertake checking of design deliverables Review and cascading of current industry standards Maintain Safety, Health and Environmental awareness of all design staff Ensure the quality of all design submissions Discharge the responsibilities of the Designer under the 2015 CDM regulations including the principles of prevention Promote and enforce company procedures to design staff Review method statements and risk assessments Develop and implement new industry software where applicable Ensure design deliverables are met and report on performance to the Head of Design or their associates Promote safe by design principles, and consider sustainability and low carbon options Lead detailed design and calculations in accordance with relevant standards and procedures, under the direction of the head of design or their associates May assume the role of Lead Design Engineer on large or complex projects as required Assist the Design Manager with appointing and providing training where necessary and manage design staff efficiently Business development with DNOs and TSOs, including prospecting, tendering and delivering design services Assist with production of design tools and review of internal procedures Maintain excellent understanding of relevant British Standards and Eurocodes relating to primary design and specification Work closely with other members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions Collaborate with engineers and technicians from other disciplines, including external consultants where necessary Coordinate with site construction teams, principal designers (2015 CDM) and temporary works coordinators; support constructability reviews Support tender and tender preparation for projects of all sizes including fee estimates Provide support to CAD staff and trainees in their professional development Ensure thorough checking and accuracy of deliverables Manage and keep records in accordance with company QA procedures Maintain calculation and drawing records Participate in lessons learned and knowledge-share workshops and disseminate across the organisation and design team Attend in-house design courses and seminars and feedback to the department as required Keep up to date with IET/IMechE CPD requirements Report to management as required Display excellent team ethic and, when required, the ability to work extended hours Represent Omexom - Design in external project technical meetings and events/site visits as required Develop positive relationships with customers through professional conduct Review specialist subcontractors/suppliers production calculations and drawings for technical compliance with design intent Establish relationships with key stakeholders:

Ability to work accurately and methodically under pressure and tight deadlines Excellent time and cost management to ensure cost-effective and accurate delivery Effective time management and coordination within small teams across multiple projects Good communication and interpersonal skills Able to work within a team of professionals to satisfy the agreed brief (e.g., Primary Engineers, OHL, Kelvin Power, Temp works designers) Strong communication, influencing and negotiation skills Supervision, technical mentoring and staff development Complete timesheets accurately and ensure the team does the same Maintain an excellent team ethic with the ability to work extended hours when required Demonstrate a high level of competency and initiative, with the ability to develop new processes and efficiencies Qualification: degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent to Engineering Council standards (EngC I.Eng or C.Eng) with membership of a PEI such as ICE, IET or IMechE; mandatory Omexom training courses Detailed understanding of the latest OHL design practices, standards and analysis software systems Preferable BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering with 7-10 years OHL design and construction industry experience Full UK Driving Licence 6-10 years experience on significant value schemes as a designer Principal Designer/Principal Design Engineer to be at least Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng); preference for Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) Attend National Grid Persons Course CSCS card as Academically Qualified Person (AQP) / Safety Passport or equivalent; working knowledge of the 2015 CDM Regulations including Principal Designer requirements Discharge responsibilities of Designer under the 2015 CDM Regulations and ensure a comprehensive Designer’s Risk Assessment for all projects Promote and enforce company procedures for design staff Knowledge of current UK technical standards and legislation; understanding of typical UK construction materials Attention to detail and constructability awareness High proficiency in Microsoft Office; proficient in design software such as AutoCAD and Revit Strong understanding of document control and BIM as per ISO 19650; high proficiency in AutoCAD 2D/3D Strong technical capability in all aspects of infrastructure design and coordination Ability to produce CDM as-builts and input/produce the health and safety file where appropriate Support the design delivery manager and, when required, undertake this role Good communication skills and adaptability Ability to manage change, with effective change control and early warnings Report on cost of poor quality via NCRs and change records Reliable team leader with a drive for continual improvement Commitment to detailed work and high quality outputs Undertake design project peer reviews and provide technical support to the construction team Note:
