Duties

As a Construction Control Representative within the Geologic Hazards Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Leads the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of scientific facilities. Ensures that maintenance is completed according to schedule and that the facilities and systems operate to standard. Identifies potential repairs, improvements, and upgrades to ensure the facilities remain in good working condition.
  • Leads the project procurement process, including documentation, scope of work, schedules, and project reviews, to ensure projects are completed to the required specifications. Serves as the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) for the project.
  • Serves as project manager for multiple complex and technical projects that routinely overlap and are often multi-phase. Leads or oversees the technical design, planning, budgeting, construction, and commissioning of the project. Ensures that projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Works as part of a team of scientists, engineers, contractors, and management to maintain a network of fourteen magnetic observatories across the U.S. and territories, including the continental U.S. Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
  • Operates a government owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires the incumbent to be on your feet throughout the day, possibly for long stretches at a time. Regular and recurring field surveys and construction site inspections shall occur. Inspections involve a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, climbing, bending and stooping.

May be required to operate a government owned or leased vehicle in the performance of official duties. Physical moving of bulky and light to moderately heavy items may be required, which could include recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items weighing up to 75 lbs.
The remainder of time may be sedentary and include writing of Statements of Work (SOW), reviewing submittals, billing and making payments. The work environment requires the incumbent to continually stay alert, take special safety precautions and may require wearing special protective items of clothing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Most work takes place in an office setting, with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Office conditions do not require special safety precautions. There will be occasional visits to facilities and construction sites in remote areas. Such visits expose the incumbent to a variety of hazards associated with facilities operations and construction activities, including high noise levels, dust, moving equipment, chemicals, potentially hazardous waste, etc. Field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as exposure to extreme temperatures, noxious or toxic gases, ice, or flooding.

When not in the office, incumbent may work in confined areas such as utility closets, near or above ceilings, in machine rooms, etc. Incumbent may work from various heights on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. Duties are performed both inside and outside in weather conditions varying from hot, humid summer heat to below freezing winter temperatures.
