SUMMARY

The Ophthalmology Technician/Scribe is responsible for providing the highest quality ophthalmic patient care possible. The Ophthalmic Technician accurately scribes for all requested providers, and will work closely with our multi-specialty surgeons. The Ophthalmic Technician performs patient histories, completes requested ophthalmic testing and consistently provides superior customer service for the patients. The Ophthalmic Technician ensures the proper utilization of time and movement of the patient throughout the patient visit to reduce or eliminate any wait time. This position will coordinate surgeries, scribe, and help to support new programs being launched at the practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor Degree or Associate Degree in a related field highly preferred
  • Two years of ophthalmology experience preferred
  • Prefer home study ophthalmic program completed within 6 months of employment
  • Prefer JCAHPO COA Certification within 18 months of employment

  • Must be able to handle multiple projects at one time accurately and efficiently

  • Must have a complete knowledge of all forms (electronic & paper) used in the office
  • Must have an understanding of the anatomy & physiology of the eye
  • Must have an understanding of ophthalmic terminology, spelling and pronunciation
  • Must have an understanding of ophthalmic testing equipment
  • Must have an understanding of CPT and ICD-10 codes for ophthalmic billing
  • Must be self-directed, highly motivated and be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have a hands-on working knowledge of sterile technique

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consistently performs proper documentation of case history, confrontation visual fields, pupil evaluation, screening extra-ocular muscle function, visual acuity, instillation of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, amsler grid and other functions as directed by the clinical physician
  • Performs auto and manual refractions according to practice protocols in a timely and efficient manner
  • Accurately scribes for assigned physician
  • Must be able to operate Eyedoc's electronic medical record software in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ensures all charges for the patient's visit are recorded properly
  • Obtains eyeglass prescriptions via automatic and manual lensometer
  • Must be able to refract within +/- .25 diopters within six (6) months of employment
  • Must be able to properly perform manual refractions as needed
  • Performs patient testing accurately and effectively as directed by the clinical provider(s) i.e. Contact Lens Training, Slit Lamp Exam, Visual Fields, Color Test, Stereo Testing, Tonometry, OCT's, Specular Microscopy, Fundus Photos, Slit Lamp Photos, Pachymetry, etc.
  • Must be able to prepare, set-up and assist with minor surgery office procedures as needed
  • Ensure all proper consents are completed for all surgical procedures
  • Effectively communicates physician instructions to patients and documents accordingly
  • Documents and informs the front desk personnel of patient flow delays
  • Responsible for pharmacy calls, patient calls, etc. in a timely manner
  • Ensures all patient lanes are clean and well-stocked and instruments are properly sterilized as needed at the end of each day as required
  • Ensures all equipment is turned off and covered properly at the end of day as required
  • Processes e-scripts as requested
  • Completes all meaningful use requirements for the practice
  • Follows all documentation protocols for the practice
  • Maintains proper work-up standards of productivity as defined by physician requirements, patient diagnosis and as defined by management

  • Exhibits professional demeanor which includes being well groomed with a clean and well pressed uniform with a positive enthusiastic attitude at all times when representing the practice
  • Maintains certification, where applicable, and continues to improve skills. Must attend in-services and webinar training seminars as directed by the management
  • Sets goals and objectives for professional growth. Reviews and revises goals on an ongoing basis
  • Provides input on how to improve customer service, decrease costs and increase revenues for the practice

  • Exhibits flexibility, sensitivity and respect while maintaining an effective working relationship with all team members
  • Maintains practice confidentiality, follows HIPAA/OSHA guidelines and follows the rules and regulations of the practice as documented in the practice employee manual
  • Completes any additional tasks and responsibilities as noted in the pay for performance program
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by management and/or physicians

  • The majority of the time on-the-job is spent walking, sitting, using hands to hold items and move items, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, stooping, crouching and bending
  • At times the job may require weight to be lifted up to 50 pounds
  • The job requires the following types of vision: close, distance, peripheral and depth
  • Typical noise level for the work environment of this job is moderate (i.e. business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
  • Work in an office environment and sustain posture in a seated position for moderate periods of time
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone
  • Hearing must be adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone
