Lead Software Architect - Remote
Ambry Port (AP) is Ambry's primary customer- and clinician-facing ordering and case-management platform, supporting test ordering, case review, billing, messaging, and integration with downstream systems. The Lead Software Architect will drive the modernization of Ambry Port by designing and leading the new Java/Spring Boot–based backend platform. This role provides the strategic technical direction, architectural governance, and hands-on leadership required to transform a legacy Symfony/PHP monolith into a scalable, service-oriented platform aligned with long-term enterprise modernization goals. The architect will partner closely with engineering, DevOps, product, security, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure AP evolves into a secure, maintainable, cloud-native system.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the refactoring and modernization of legacy systems, as well as the design of new services, using the Java/Spring Boot ecosystem and AWS cloud services, with a focus on event-driven, scalable, and resilient architectures.
  • Own and evolve the core backend platform, including identity, authorization, routing, orchestration, audit, notification, and other shared services.
  • Design cloud-native architectures that meet high availability, scalability, observability, and security requirements.
  • Define and execute modernization roadmaps, including phased migration and strangler-fig patterns, to replace legacy monoliths.
  • Establish reference architectures, standards, and reusable platform components to streamline development across services and front-end applications.
  • Partner with security teams to implement Okta-based authentication and enforce IAM, audit logging, and compliance controls.
  • Guide database schema modernization and data access patterns (e.g., JPA/Hibernate or custom repositories).
  • Architect event-driven integrations and asynchronous workflows using AWS messaging services such as SQS and EventBridge.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews, conduct code reviews, and drive performance and cost optimizations.
  • Provide hands-on prototypes and POCs, and mentor engineers on design principles, patterns, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with DevOps to ensure CI/CD pipelines, Terraform IaC, logging, alerting, and monitoring meet reliability and SLO targets.
  • Promote cloud-native reliability practices, including distributed tracing and robust service health checks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in large-scale architectural or technical leadership roles.
  • Expert in Java 17+/21, Spring Boot 3.x, RESTful API design, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Proven experience modernizing legacy systems and decomposing monoliths using domain-driven design and strangler-fig patterns.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS cloud services, such as ECS/Fargate, API Gateway or ALB, SQS/SNS, RDS/Aurora, ElastiCache/Redis, and SSM Parameter Store.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing enterprise authentication and authorization (e.g., Okta, OAuth2/OIDC, JWT).
  • Solid database design and query optimization skills, with familiarity using ORM frameworks such as Hibernate/JPA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence engineering leaders, cross-functional teams, and executives.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred

  • Experience modernizing applications.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture, CQRS, or Domain-Driven Design.
  • Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins) for microservices and cloud-native applications.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform (or similar IaC tools) to provision and manage AWS infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of observability practices and tooling (logging, metrics, tracing) using platforms such as CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, or New Relic.
  • Background in healthcare, genomics, or other regulated industries (HIPAA, audit controls).
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Certifications: AWS Solutions Architect, Java Professional, or similar.
