The Planning Intern supports the City's planning and zoning functions by assisting with a wide range of development, redevelopment, and long-range planning activities. This position helps with day-to-day zoning administration, responds to public inquiries, coordinates development applications across departments, and assists with research, analysis, and project tracking related to land use proposals and policy initiatives. The intern will review building permits for zoning compliance, contribute to updates of the 2050 Comprehensive Plan and zoning and subdivision ordinances, and help prepare staff reports, presentations, and meeting materials. Opportunities may include attending and occasionally presenting at City Council and advisory board meetings, collaborating with multiple departments, and supporting strategic projects that shape the City's future, with occasional evening work for public meetings.The Planning Intern is anticipated to work 29 to 40 hours per week.This position is expected to last 3 months and may be extended based on the needs of the City.Recruitment Timeline (subject to change): Position Opens: Friday, January 2ndPosition Closes: Sunday, January 11th at 11:59 p.m.Interviews: Week of January 19th and/or week of January 26th
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Assist in day-to-day zoning administration duties including responding to public inquiries via email, phone, and public visits to the front counterCoordinate development applications: Coordinate development review with other city departmentsPrepare draft staff reports and presentations on land use applicationsAssist with project tracking Conduct research and analysis relative to current development proposals and other assigned projects based upon appropriate plans, policies and ordinancesReview various building permits for zoning compliancePerform research, fieldwork, and analysis for the City's 2050 Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, and a variety of other planning mattersOccasionally attend meetings of the City Council, Planning Commission, Parks and Trails Board, Energy and Environment Committee, and Heritage Preservation Board. Including presentation of reports and information, agenda creation and meeting preparation. Keep informed of planning and development practices, trends, and innovationsOther Job FunctionsParticipate as needed with the Community Development Director on the city's strategic projects, such as the Zoning Study, Panoway on Wayzata Bay, 2050 Comprehensive Plan process, and Strategic Plan implementationAbility to work occasional evenings for public meetingsWork closely with other departments and divisions within the organizationPerform other duties and special projects as assigned
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Master's degree in Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture or a related fieldCustomer service experiencePrevious municipal planning experience Knowledge of best practices in architectural design Experience studying, writing, and managing updates to zoning codes
