What You’ll Be Doing:

As a Senior Control & Instrumentation Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of submarine technology. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and managing system, product, and system-of-systems requirements with robust acceptance criteria that align with program needs.
  • Producing comprehensive design review documentation , including diagrams, technical specifications, calculations, and justifications for design decisions.
  • Supporting Certificate of Design activities by preparing evidence and presenting complex technical arguments clearly and logically.
  • Deriving detailed hardware and software requirements for control systems, guiding suppliers in equipment design and specification.
  • Overseeing the creation of functional design specifications , managing physical system interfaces, and attributing signal-level functionality through system databases.
  • Conducting design verification and generating evidence to meet IEC 61508/61511 or equivalent functional safety standards, ensuring compliance and safety justification.
Your Skills and Experiences:

We’re looking for candidates who are:

  • Degree-qualified (BEng/MEng or equivalent), ideally working towards professional registration.
  • Skilled in technical report writing with experience across the engineering lifecycle.
  • Knowledgeable about defence standards (beneficial but not essential).
  • Experienced in system calculations, modelling, and analysis .
  • Familiar with instrumentation and control theory (e.g., PID), control system architecture, or functional decomposition.
  • Capable of interpreting and applying systems engineering principles within complex technical environments.

About the Centralised Control and Instrumentation Team:

Join a highly skilled group of 16 engineers at the forefront of SSNA (Successor/Next-Generation Submarine) platform development. Our team shapes, matures, and validates the platform’s most critical control systems—ensuring the submarine’s core automated functions operate reliably and safely in line with IEC 61508 and other functional safety standards. This is an exciting opportunity to directly influence the next generation of submarine control systems, designed to perform flawlessly in the world’s most demanding conditions.

We also offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
