Job Title: Chef/Cafe production assistant

Overview:This role will be responsible for producing a variety of menu items, including soups, sandwiches, salads, deli items, cookies, scones, tarts, loaf and coffee cakes, pastry dough, quiche, and other items as needed. As part of the kitchen team, you'll support the morning bake; batch pastry, prep, soup, salad, and sandwich prep as needed; shared cleaning; inventory management; and ordering responsibilities as needed. All of our kitchen team also supports FOH in facilitating customer orders for hot items like our BEC and quiche when the cafe is busy. You will also collaborate with the Head Chef to develop new products, and to set and achieve goals. The role requires knowledge of NYS health code standards and willingness to uphold them.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Make menu items as laid out by the prep schedule.
  • Help develop new products, especially for seasonal menu changes and special events.
  • Work with the kitchen team and FOH Manager to place our weekly food order and order other items as needed.
  • Support FOH in facilitating customer orders for hot menu items like our BECs, baguette sandwiches, and quiche when the cafe is busy.
  • Assist with events and catering, including food prep and event execution as needed.
  • Use kitchen systems (checklists, date tracking, labeling, etc.) and communicate across the kitchen team as needed.
  • Foster and help develop a strong team and positive work environment.
  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked kitchen and ensure that we're in compliance with all health and safety standards.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a baker or similar role in the food industry.
  • Knowledge of food handling procedures and food safety regulations.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to keep your space clean and organized and be aware of your surroundings and personal space as you work.
  • Respect and willingness to perform shared cleaning tasks.
  • Ability to follow systems and production methods set by management.
  • Ability to accept feedback and improve methods and skills.
  • Ability to attend monthly 1:1s with the BOH Manager and monthly team meetings.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Honest and kind.

Schedule:

  • 18 hours/week with the possibility of picking up hours to cover other shifts as needed and the possibility of adding a fourth shift as the business grows.
  • 3 days/week, 6-8 hour shifts
