Job Title: Senior Engineer - Electrical Engineering (C & I)
Location: Barrow-in-Furness (Hybrid - 2 days onsite per fortnight, depending on business needs)
Salary: Competitive (Commensurate with skills and experience)
What You'll Be Doing:Join our dynamic team and take on exciting challenges as you:
- Develop functional designs for Control & Instrumentation (C&I) solutions in electrical systems, deriving designs from Piping & Instrumentation diagrams.
- Create Bills of Materials for C&I equipment.
- Specify instrumentation for measuring pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analysis tailored to specific process conditions.
- Produce C&I designs that meet a variety of standards, including functional, safety, defence, British, naval, and nuclear standards.
- Assess compliance against non-functional stakeholders (EMC, Shock, Metallics, etc.).
- Generate verification evidence to demonstrate design compliance with requirements.
- Draft various design documents, including I/O schedules, instrument schedules, cable schedules, and specifications.
- Implement physical system-to-system interface designs.
- Lead technical design reviews for C&I.
- Articulate and present technical arguments clearly and logically.
- Conduct peer reviews.
- Manage system design maturity to meet program demands.
- Liaise with internal and external customers as part of a collaborative technical team.
We’re looking for someone with:
- BEng (Hons) / MEng or equivalent.
- Progress towards professional registration.
- Strong technical report writing skills.
- Demonstrable experience in the engineering lifecycle.
- Knowledge of defence standards is a plus.
- Experience in system calculations, modelling, and analysis .
- Understanding of at least one of the following areas:
- Legacy understanding of submarine design programs:
- Experience with high, medium, and low voltage systems.
- Familiarity with control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
- Completion and verification of designs in accordance with IEC 61508 Functional Safety (or similar) and production of supporting evidence.
- A multi-disciplinary understanding of engineering, including Mechanical, Process, Instrument, Electrical, Control, and Safety.
- Experience specifying equipment for use in Hazardous Areas and producing verification evidence (e.g., Hazardous Area Schedule, Intrinsically Safe Loop Calculations).
- Input to the production and improvement of process instructions.

This is an incredible opportunity to work as a Senior Engineer within our Marine Systems Control and Instrumentation Team, focusing on the SSNA program and next-generation submarine design.
In this role, you will support Principal Engineers and external specialists during the development, analysis, integration, and verification of platform control and instrumentation systems. You’ll lead analysis and produce technical reports and team deliverables, managing operator control console design to meet defined criteria and program demands.
We also offer relocation support packages for all Submarines roles, subject to eligibility criteria.
