Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary: Circa £55,000

As a Lead Principal Engineer within the SSNA Platform Mechanical Integrated Delivery Team (IDT), you will be at the forefront of a complex and exciting submarine programme. Your leadership will be crucial in delivering engineering excellence across multiple systems, ensuring quality and timely outputs while fostering collaboration across disciplines.

• Lead the delivery of engineering scope, ensuring high-quality design, integration, and qualification.
• Oversee technical ownership of mechanical systems, ensuring compliance and effective collaboration.
• Produce essential engineering artifacts, including documentation and simulations.
• Manage task allocation and progress tracking using structured tools like Jira and Confluence.
• Coach and support engineers at all levels, nurturing their technical capabilities and confidence.
• Collaborate with peers, suppliers, and stakeholders to resolve issues and maintain momentum.
• Review technical documentation and manage change control with sound engineering judgment.
• Proactively identify and address delivery shortfalls, fostering a culture of improvement and accountability.

We’re looking for a confident leader who can mentor others and contribute to a collaborative culture. You should have:

• A proven track record in delivering complex mechanical or multi-disciplinary engineering tasks in a regulated environment.
• Experience in mentoring or coaching engineers for technical and professional growth.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to lead discussions and build strong relationships.
• Effective collaboration skills across engineering, project, safety, ILS, and supply chain functions.
• Familiarity with task and documentation management tools such as Jira and Confluence.
• Progress towards or already holding professional registration (CEng preferred).
• A STEM-related degree (or equivalent experience) with a strong foundation in systems thinking and platform-level integration.
