About The Role
The Overhead Line Design Engineer role at NG Bailey offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic team responsible for designing and delivering overhead line (OHL) projects across the UK. This hybrid position allows for a flexible working arrangement, with options to work from NG Bailey’s offices in Leeds, Stowmarket, or London, as well as from home. The successful candidate will be pivotal in managing the technical aspects of new build and refurbishment projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. You will work closely with the team lead and collaborate with various stakeholders to develop innovative designs that meet client requirements and technical specifications. The role involves site visits, client meetings, and internal project reviews, providing a comprehensive exposure to the full project lifecycle. This position is ideal for a motivated engineer looking to advance their career within a reputable organization committed to excellence and professional growth.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess a strong educational background and relevant experience. Essential qualifications include a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, along with proven experience in overhead line design within the power transmission and distribution industry. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of OHL design principles, standards applicable in the UK, and experience in producing detailed designs, calculations, reports, and drawings for projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV. Proficiency in design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER is required. Additional desirable qualifications include knowledge of MicroStation CAD software, a CSCS card, and a full UK driving license. Strong communication skills, project management capabilities, and familiarity with relevant regulations such as CDM 2015 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations are also essential. Candidates are encouraged to be chartered or nearing chartership status, reflecting the company’s commitment to professional development.
Responsibilities
The Overhead Line Design Engineer will be responsible for a wide range of technical and project management tasks. Key responsibilities include undertaking the design and development of overhead line projects, ensuring all work complies with relevant safety, technical, and client standards. This involves conductor sizing and modelling, insulation selection, lighting protection, line routing, and structure and foundation design using tools like PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE. The engineer will prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including engineering reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations, maintaining accuracy and adherence to industry standards. They will also develop project proposals, define scope, allocate resources, establish budgets, and set deliverables. Providing technical support and mentorship to junior engineers and team members is a critical aspect of the role, fostering a collaborative environment. The engineer will operate within the quality assurance framework of NG Bailey, ensuring all work aligns with established project management methodologies. Additionally, attendance at site visits, inspections, and stakeholder meetings will be necessary to facilitate project progress and resolve technical issues promptly.
