Job Summary:
The EH&S Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining environmental, safety, and health programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations within a chemical manufacturing environment. This role focuses on minimizing risks, promoting a strong safety culture, and ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensures adherence to OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, and other applicable regulations.
- Prepares and submits required reporting e.g. SARA, RCRA, stormwater, emissions, permit renewal applications.
- Interfaces with regulatory agencies proactively and on an as needed basis.
- Monitors current and pending regulations, providing timely interpretation and summaries to affected facility.
- Supports facility in the timely reporting of EHS matters to internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies.
Safety Program Management:
- Develops and supports the implementation of company EHS standards to ensure facility compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses for chemical processes.
- Coaches and mentors' operations management teams and site on EHS matters, encouraging continuous improvement.
- Leads and supports companywide EHS initiatives, working collaboratively with operations management teams and other company departments.
- Identifies best practices and strategically integrates them into facility EHS plans.
Incident Management:
- Supports and encourages timely incident investigations, leading the Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process when needed.
- Maintains records of incidents and coordinates with regulatory agencies as needed.
- Responds and provides real time assistance in emergency situations.
Training & Communication:
- Designs and deliver safety training programs for all employees of the organization, including HAZCOM and emergency response/fire & mock drills.
- Promotes a proactive safety culture through regular communication and engagement.
Audits & Inspections:
- Performs regular safety audits and inspections of facilities and processes to detect existing or potential accidents and health hazards.
- Determines corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Ensures proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
- Analyzes EHS metrics, communicating and implementing action plans to address trends.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
We assume that the possible candidate can think and act independently and entrepreneurially, that the candidate has a structured way of working, analytical capabilities paired with an instinct for people and is a flexible team-player with a "hands-on" mentality.
In addition, we require:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Safety Management, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Certification preferred (CIH, CSP, and/or CHP).
- 7-10+ years of progressive experience in Safety Management; Chemical Manufacturing experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and state-specific regulations.
- Experience with hazardous materials, air permits, and environmental reporting.
- Effectively communicates across all organizational levels through clear writing, persuasive speaking, and proficient group facilitation.
- Acts as a change leader by influencing organizational behavior, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a culture of safety and compliance.
- Provides clear expectations, ensures accountability, and builds commitment while modeling professionalism, approachability, and alignment with organizational goals.
- Must be a team player that interacts effectively with co-workers in group or in independent cooperative activities.
- Ability to function under pressure and able to prioritize numerous tasks with conflicting deadlines.
- Ability to respond to emergencies and work flexible hours as needed.
- Ability to influence and to drive safety culture.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) with the ability to prepare reports, presentations, and data analysis to support decision-making.
