Elementary Teacher Assistant for 2nd Grade

Role Purpose:

To assist the homeroom teacher in advancing the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development of children within their care, in a safe, healthy learning environment.

Supervisor: Elementary Principal

Reports to: Homeroom Teacher and Elementary Assistant Principal

Key Responsibilities

  • To promote the school's vision, mission, core values, and beliefs.
  • To develop and promote international-mindedness and all attributes of the IB learner profile across the school community.
  • To assist the homeroom teacher in the preparation of the assigned curriculum, ensuring that lessons contain appropriately designed assignments and activities, which challenge and meet the individual needs of all students.
  • To assist students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., read stories, providing writing assistance, reinforce language skills, numbers, alphabet, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
  • To facilitate the personal care of students which may include toileting, personal hygiene, and dressing if appropriate.
  • To monitor individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • To report observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
  • To implement and reinforce whole school/classroom strategies to promote positive behavior within a variety of settings.
  • Good communications skills to discuss assigned duties with teachers and effectively coordinate instructional efforts
  • Organizational skills to prepare materials such as lesson materials, bulletin board, exhibits, equipment, etc.
  • Assist and tutor children individually and in small groups under teacher's guidance to help master material and reinforce learning
  • Oversee students in classrooms, other areas on campus, and field trips
  • Follow and enforce school rules
  • Observe and record student performance as requested to assess progress
  • Organization of classroom materials
  • Provide extra assistance to students with special needs as requested
  • Taking class attendance and maintain attendance records
  • Participate in staff meetings and committees
  • To perform general clerical tasks (e.g., laminating, making posters, making copies, display boards, filing, newsletters, etc.) for the purpose of helping the homeroom teacher get instructional materials ready.
  • To replace homeroom teachers in their absence as requested by the Elementary Principal.

  • To be familiar with, following and implementing all adopted school policies.
  • To participate in teams, groups, meetings, workshops and other sessions, with the aim of contributing to the school's development.
  • To conform with the administrative procedures of the school: punctuality, attendance at meetings, events and assemblies (if applicable)To maintain high standards and a professional behaviour.
  • To adhere to school hours (including CCA or ECA commitments) as indicated by the post holder's supervisor.
  • To inform the appropriate supervisor of any absenteeism or late arrival in a timely fashion.
  • To dress appropriately (see staff dress code in Staff Handbook)
  • To follow the correct channels of communication.
  • To follow appropriate procedures regarding grievances or complaints.
  • To undertake any reasonable request made by the post holder's supervisor.
  • To assists with the home- school communication process by providing information to the homeroom teacher about individual students.
  • To assist in communication with parents as instructed by the homeroom teacher.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Education: University Degree preferred
  • Language: Bilingual Spanish & English skills (desired)
  • Proven experience working with children of school age
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Assist the teacher in planning and implementing activities with children
  • Follow basic principles of childhood development
  • Establish and maintain effective, working relationships with children, parents, staff
    Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Professionalism
