Position Information
Play a key role in keeping Houston's roads safe and moving. The Traffic Engineering Section in Houston District is seeking a Transportation Engineer Technician II to join its design group. In this position, you will be responsible for preparing design for traffic signal, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and roadway illumination. Position Description
Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
- Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
- Performs intermediate design work.
- Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
- Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.
- Prepares field notes.
- Prepares quantity summaries.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, and signal plans.
- Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 2 years of experience in drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads, or AutoCAD for plan preparation.
- Previous work on traffic signal, Intelligent Transportation Systems, or roadway illumination projects.
- Familiarity with traffic engineering principles, construction plans, and design standards.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Relevant certifications (e.g. Transportation or Civil Engineering related certifications) are a plus.

Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
- Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
Proficient skill in:
Performing advanced drafting
- Writing and revising standards and procedures
- Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Ability to:
Follow verbal and written instructions
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
- Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Stooping - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
- Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Reaching - extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
- Standing - prolonged periods of time
- Walking - moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
