Position Summary:
The Lead Blood Bank CLS oversees day-to-day technical and operational activities within the Transfusion Services section of the Clinical Laboratory. This role ensures regulatory compliance, maintains high testing standards, and acts as a subject matter expert and resource for the Blood Bank CLSs. The lead supports laboratory leadership by assisting with quality initiatives, training, inventory management, and implementation of new methodologies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
- Performs and reviews high-complexity testing including blood typing, antibody screening/identification, crossmatching, and compatibility testing.
- Serves as the technical resource and troubleshooter for complex serologic cases.
- Oversees and supports operational workflow, ensuring efficient and accurate testing.
Compliance & Quality:
- Ensures compliance with regulatory standards including AABB, CAP, FDA, and The Joint Commission.
- Leads or assists in quality assurance/quality improvement initiatives, audits, and validation studies.
- Monitors QC, proficiency testing, and corrective action documentation.
Training & Competency:
- Provides onboarding and ongoing training to staff and CLS students.
- Maintains and documents competency assessments for blood bank personnel.
- Serves as liaison for blood bank-related education and cross-training efforts.
Inventory & Equipment Oversight:
- Monitors and manages blood component inventory and coordinates orders with blood suppliers.
- Ensures appropriate equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
Communication & Collaboration:
- Collaborates with nursing, physicians, and other departments to resolve issues and improve patient care.
- Participates in departmental meetings and communicates updates to staff.
Administrative Support:
- Assists staff evaluations, and workflow coverage planning.
- Actively work and investigate on Midas Safe event for Transfusion Services
- Provides input on policy updates and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field.
Licensure/Certification:
- Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license issued by the State of California.
- SBB (Specialist in Blood Banking) certification preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical laboratory experience, with at least 3 years in a transfusion service/blood bank.
- Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of immunohematology and transfusion practices.
- Strong understanding of laboratory regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Ability to lead and mentor staff effectively.
- Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in LIS and blood bank middleware systems such as SafeTrace.
Working Conditions:
- May require occasional evening, weekend, or on-call hours to support operations.
- Standing, walking, and manual dexterity required for extended periods.
- Exposure to biohazards and bloodborne pathogens.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $57.86 - $78.16 per hour
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
