As Assistant Controller at Gaines Investment Trust, you will play a key leadership role in managing day-to-day accounting operations, providing critical financial support across our nationwide real estate portfolio. Your expertise will ensure smooth financial workflows, accurate reporting, and strategic contributions to the company's continued success. The position reports to the Controller and has two direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting functions to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and timely financial processes.
- Respond to inquiries from property and corporate teams with timely, solutions-focused support.
- Identify and implement process improvements that reduce manual tasks and increase operational efficiency.
- Manage cash flow across the portfolio and coordinate funding needs accordingly.
- Perform daily banking tasks including ACH initiations, positive pay exceptions, and stop payment processing.
- Perform detailed financial reviews, prepare variance reports, and review/approve balance sheet reconciliations.
- Play a key role in budgeting, lender reporting, and property tax payment management.
- Tackle various accounting initiatives and special projects with ownership and follow-through.
Who Thrives in This Role?
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented accounting leader with:
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
- 3+ years of real estate/multifamily accounting experience (required)
- CPA license or public accounting background (a plus, but not required)
- Experience mentoring and managing accounting teams
- Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency in Yardi (required)
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Clear, professional communication abilities
- A proactive, solutions-driven approach
- High degree of integrity and confidentiality
