Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Administrator (DBA) who also functions as a Database Engineer to support a mission-critical SQL Server environment hosted on a private cloud. This role combines traditional DBA responsibilities with engineering, automation, performance tuning, and cloud-migration expertise.

You will manage, optimize, secure, and scale our SQL Server infrastructure while contributing to data engineering initiatives, ETL development, and integrations across Azure-based platforms. The ideal candidate has strong T-SQL skills, deep knowledge of database performance, and hands-on experience working with Active Directory, Entra ID, and Azure SQL family services.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, patch, secure, and optimize SQL Server databases hosted in a private cloud environment.
  • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot dynamic T-SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and views.
  • Perform schema design, data modeling, normalization/denormalization, and implementation of relational structures.
  • Build, optimize, and maintain ETL pipelines using T-SQL, SSIS, Python, PowerShell, or other automation tools.
  • Perform deep query performance analysis, index design, index optimization, partitioning strategies, conduct server and query-level performance tuning (CPU, memory, IO, query plans, statistics).
  • Design and implement highly available database architectures to support application scale and redundancy.
  • Administer and integrate databases with Active Directory and Entra ID for identity governance and role-based access and implement database security best practices: encryption, auditing, access management, network controls.
  • Support migration of on-prem / private cloud databases to Azure SQL, Azure Postgres Flexible Server, and other cloud database platforms.
  • Work with Azure networking components: VNets, NSGs, network gateways, private endpoints, load balancers, Azure DNS.
  • Design and implement backup, retention, failover, and restore strategies aligned with organizational RTO/RPO.
  • Support disaster recovery testing and validation, including time-travel, failover mechanisms, and replication validation.
  • Develop automations using PowerShell, SQL, Azure CLI, and Microsoft Graph.
  • Implement CI/CD processes for database deployments (schema changes, scripts, migrations).

Qualifications

  • years of experience as a SQL Server DBA and/or Database Engineer.
  • Expert-level proficiency in T-SQL, indexing, query tuning, and performance optimization.
  • Strong experience with Active Directory, Entra ID, and SQL security/access patterns.
  • Hands-on experience managing private cloud SQL Server deployments.
  • Experience with ETL pipeline implementation and optimization.
  • Familiarity with Azure SQL, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure VM SQL Server, and/or Azure Postgres Flexible Server.
  • Strong scripting abilities: PowerShell, SQL scripts, Microsoft Graph.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals within Azure: VNets, NSGs, private endpoints, DNS, gateways.
  • Experience with backup/restore strategies, high availability, disaster recovery, RTO/RPO planning.
  • Experience supporting data migrations between database engines (SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL) and environments.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for database changes.
  • Experience working in regulated environments or those requiring high availability.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

This is largely a sedentary role; however, building access is limited to two sets of stairs and may require lifting or moving objects up to 30 lbs. The employee is frequently required to sit for long periods of time.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
