Job Description

The City of Chesapeake Department of Information Technology is seeking a motivated and technically curious IT Systems Engineer I to join our IT Enterprise Operations Team. This role is a great opportunity for an emerging systems engineer who is eager to grow, collaborate, and help support the City's critical technology infrastructure. Think solid engineering fundamentals, room to learn, and systems that actually matter to a community.

As part of the Systems Engineering Team, you will help support, maintain, and enhance the City's private and public cloud environments and core data center infrastructure. You will work alongside experienced engineers on projects, operational support, troubleshooting, upgrades, and future expansion efforts that keep City services running smoothly.

This position reports to the Systems Engineering Team Lead and works closely with other IT teams across the department. If you enjoy solving problems, documenting solutions, and being part of a team that values best practices and innovation, this role may be a great fit.

What You Will Do

  • Support and maintain the City's core computing environment, including private and public cloud infrastructure
  • Assist with infrastructure projects, including planning, documentation, implementation, and migration activities
  • Coordinate timelines and vendor installations to support successful project delivery
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize resource utilization
  • Serve as the first escalation point for Windows Server related troubleshooting for City IT staff
  • Perform regular system updates and patching to maintain security and reliability
  • Provide backup support to Endpoint Engineering for basic ticket resolution, software packaging, deployment, and troubleshooting

Technical Focus Areas

  • VMware administration including vSphere, vCenter Server, Aria Automation, vSAN, NSX T, and NSX ALB
  • Active Directory administration including user and group management, Group Policy Objects, and domain controllers

Required Qualifications

Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a associate's degree in computer science, information systems, Audio Engineering, or a closely related field.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience in audio/visual engineering and supporting Teams Rooms and Extron equipment (or equivalent).

Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.

Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of experience in systems administration, with a focus on VMware, Active Directory, and Windows Server (or equivalent).
  • Basic understanding of end-point management and related technologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with colleagues and external partners to achieve common goals.
  • High level of attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Experience working with IT Service Management Systems (Service Now)
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • Experience with scripting and automation tools, such as PowerShell.
  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate
  • Familiarity with public and private cloud platforms, such as AWS and VMware Cloud Foundations.
  • Knowledge of ITIL processes and best practices.
  • Understanding of network and storage concepts.
  • Load balancing concepts
  • Incident, Problem, and Change Management experience.
  • Experience supporting public sector Information Technology
