POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening
community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at the
Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all
individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans
accordingly; supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
2. Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and
colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and
the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
Prepares attendance records, skill performance reports, progress reports and end of session certificates.
Calls participants whenever class changes occur, such as in instances of inclement weather.
Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
Maintains order and discipline among participants.
Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and, as appropriate, refers program
participants and families to other programs.
8. Knows and reviews AMA YMCA Aquatics Safety Plan and follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and
procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as
necessary.
9. Applies all YMCA policies and procedures and exemplifies the YMCA core values of caring, honesty,
respect, responsibility, and faith.
10. All other duties as assigned.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
? Minimum age of 16.
? Certifications: Professional rescuer CPR/AED/O2 and First Aid.
? Current YMCA Swim Instructor or equivalent.
? Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
? Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
? Capacity to work cooperatively in a team environment.
? Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic
segments of the community.
? Child Abuses Prevention, Understanding Your Biases, Anti-Harassment, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazard
Communication Awareness, and Slips, Trips, and Falls trainings required within 30 days of hire.

? Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
? Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average size child.
