Our client has almost 50 years of expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems for a diverse range of industry sectors. They are regarded as a leading automation system solution provider in the UK. They are seeking to recruit an experienced Lead / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to complement the team and deliver innovative special purpose automation machinery projects.
Based near Leicester, the role involves both designing and overseeing an array of special purpose machine projects from order acceptance to customer handover. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, detailing and successful delivery of multiple projects, communicating effectively with customers, suppliers and team members, and working as part of a team dedicated to delivering projects on time and within budget.
Responsibilities
Perform mechanical design and detailing for multiple projects using 3D CAD within the project plan timelines.
Arrange Design Reviews during the design process to ensure they are well executed, meet requirements, are designed for assembly, robust and reliable, and within budget.
Obtain a Design Pass Off by the customer on time and ensure BOMs are produced on time and within budget.
Negotiate with external suppliers to obtain cost-efficient materials in line with project budgets and timing plans.
Assist the electrical design process by clear and effective communication throughout the project, especially during the mechanical design phase.
Compile a build folder and communicate build details to machine tool fitters to ensure an efficient build process.
Provide direction and support to fitters, electricians and other engineers as required, and undertake visits to customer sites to understand requirements and obtain measurements for dimensions, drawings, site layouts and other considerations.
Document and communicate requirements to customers and internal staff.
Assess and improve design concepts with the team at sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs and lead times, and identify key risks to assist in planning trials to mitigate them.
Ensure parts, samples and drawings are secured in advance to support the design phase and check the work produced by other designers for accuracy.
Conduct project reviews with customers and maintain a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) including manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings.
Carry out machine risk assessments during the design phase to ensure Machinery Directive requirements are met, and lead projects through development and installation with proactive and timely delivery of fixes while adhering to HSE and safety rules, guidelines and policies.
Qualifications / Experience
Proven experience in lead or senior mechanical design role within automation, machine building or similar environments.
Strong 3D CAD capability and experience in designing and detailing for assembly and manufacturing.
Experience with BOM creation, supplier negotiation, and project budgeting.
Ability to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and internal teams; experience with site visits and requirements capture.
Familiarity with risk assessment, Machinery Directive compliance, and safety standards.
Experience in developing and maintaining a Technical Construction File (TCF) and related project documentation.
