Are you passionate about building and securing the networks that keep a city running? The City of Tallahassee is hiring a Network Infrastructure Engineer to install, maintain, and safeguard the systems that power essential city services.

In this role, you'll take the lead in supporting the City's local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN) networks, implementing security standards, and evaluating cutting-edge technologies. You'll work closely with internal teams and external vendors to ensure our infrastructure is fast, reliable, and secure—while also helping guide the future of our network environment.

What You'll Do

  • Install, support, and maintain the City's network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, and telecommunications systems.
  • Implement and enforce network security standards to protect data, systems, and users across the organization.
  • Evaluate and recommend hardware, software, and telecom products that align with organizational goals.
  • Monitor network performance, troubleshoot issues, and proactively address system vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborate with departments and the Technology Infrastructure team to ensure reliable connectivity and secure access.
  • Contribute to long-term planning, design, and implementation of network upgrades and new technologies.
  • Maintain documentation and provide written reports to support visibility, planning, and compliance efforts.
  • Work independently to manage multiple priorities while exercising sound technical judgment.

Minimum Training & Experience

Possession of a bachelor's degree in, information systems, computer science or a related field and three years of professional and technical experience that includes installation and maintenance of network systems firewalls, network design, Internet and Intranet and wireless support.

Possession of a high school diploma or GED and seven years of professional and technical experience that includes installation and maintenance of network systems firewalls, network design, Internet and Intranet and wireless support.

Necessary Special Requirements

Applicant must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background screening and obtain Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) within 30 days of employment.

Driver's License Requirements

Must possess a valid Class-E State driver's license at the time of appointment.

Preferred Knowledge and Capabilities

  • Strong expertise in network protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, BGP, and OSPF, along with a solid foundation in routing, switching, and core network security principles.
  • Proven experience configuring and managing network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls, as well as working with operating systems such as Cisco IOS and platforms like Palo Alto Networks. Experience with firewall administration tools (e.g., Cisco ASA, Fortinet) is highly valued.
  • In-depth knowledge of network security concepts, including the implementation and management of firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and encryption technologies.
