PURPOSE

The Maintenance Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing training programs for the maintenance workforce. They ensure that employees are proficient in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide variety of equipment used in underground operations, such as mining machinery, conveyors, ventilation systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic equipment. This position plays a critical role in promoting safety, efficiency, and adherence to industry standards and company protocols. The Maintenance Trainer will need to have strong technical skills, leadership abilities, and teamwork spirit. They will also need to comply with all the relevant regulations, standards, and policies regarding mine safety, health, and environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance Training & Development

  • Design and develop training materials, manuals, and programs that are specific to underground maintenance operations, focusing on machinery, electrical systems, mechanical systems, and safety protocols.
  • Deliver both classroom and hands-on training in areas such as equipment maintenance, electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, hydraulic systems, welding, and heavy machinery operation.
  • Incorporate real-life underground maintenance scenarios and practical exercises to enhance learning.
  • Provide detailed training on safety procedures, such as lockout/tagout, ventilation systems, gas detection, confined space entry, and the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Ensure that all training complies with relevant safety regulations, including Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)
  • Conduct emergency response and evacuation drills specific to underground scenarios.
  • Train maintenance staff in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing critical underground equipment, such as drills, loaders, ventilation fans, conveyor belts, electrical circuits, and pumps.
  • Introduce new technologies and equipment to the team, ensuring they are up-to-date on industry advancements.
  • Administer assessments, both written and practical, to gauge the competency and technical knowledge of maintenance workforce.
  • Provide certification or competency reports for trainees who meet the required standards.
  • Work with supervisors and management to ensure that the maintenance team is compliant with regulatory requirements and internal training policies.
  • Conduct training both in underground mining and classroom settings.
  • Offer one-on-one coaching and mentoring to the maintenance team to support their professional growth and address specific technical challenges.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to help workers enhance their technical skills and safety awareness.
  • Maintain detailed records of training sessions, assessments, certifications, and trainee progress.
  • Prepare training reports for management, highlighting the effectiveness of the training programs and any areas needing improvement.
  • Other duties that may be assigned by supervisor.

Environment and Safety

  • Improve on safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions, and taking corrective action where required.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of Safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain environmental awareness amongst the workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
  • Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field preferred.
  • At least 10 years of electrical experience in underground coal mining, preferably in continuous mining operations.
  • At least 5 years of training instructor experience preferred.
  • MSHA Underground Instructor certification.
  • Proficient in the use and maintenance of continuous mining equipment and systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
