Summer Camp Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Summer Camp Coordinator at Camp Mac Boykin intentionally fosters a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined. Responsibilities will include safety and supervision of an assigned group of campers. The Summer Camp Counselor will work in cooperation with other YMCA staff to provide a safe and fun experience for campers.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in facilitating YMCA Summer Camp staff training, meetings, and family events
  • Participate in pre-camp planning and development as needed
  • Ensure a culture of inclusion that builds and celebrates diversity within the Y and our community
  • Maintain open communication (including information & approvals) with supervisor regarding program details, changes, deletions, staff details, hiring and purchases
  • Recruit, Orient, Supervise, Train, and Evaluate and Reward all related staff
  • Assist with creating daily and weekly program & activity schedules, transportation logs, snack schedules, special events, cleaning rosters, parent visits, camper overnights, etc
  • Monitor camp activities and provide support to camp counselors as needed to ensure safe and smooth operations
  • Allow counselors and CITs the opportunity to actually lead; devotions, songs, games, meetings, groups, activities and complete the details of their groups to enhance the program quality
  • Enforce all program safety and quality standards during assigned hours
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff and campers, leading with enthusiasm and a growth mindset
  • Teach and enforce appropriate behavior expectations with all children and staff and implement the YMCA discipline policy when necessary
  • Demonstrate and role model respect to YMCA property and maintain a clean and safe environment, keeping all equipment used in good order
  • Maintain up-to-date and organized attendance sheets, ensuring child security at drop-off and pick up
  • Ensure proper and adequate communication with weekly parent calls & during rides-out and family nights
  • Ensure equipment and program issues are dealt with in a timely manner
  • Attend all training, activities, and staff meetings
  • Drive any YMCA vehicle as necessary to operate programs effectively
  • Branch and association responsibilities and/or other duties & activities as assigned by leadership
  • Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct

    • The employee must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds
    • Must have the ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the ground) for long periods of time
    • Must have the ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time
    • Must be comfortable in water, specifically a lake
    • Requires bending, pulling a minimum of 100 pounds, crouching, leaning, kneeling, walking, pushing, climbing and jumping
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust
    • Hearing abilities required is normal tone of voice up to 30 feet
    • Will be subject to the elements of nature (heat, cold, insects, wind, etc.)
    • QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age and/or one year of college
    • Must have at least 2 years' experience as a camp counselor, or equivalent leadership
    • Excited to work with children and develop teen leaders
    • 1 year of supervisory experience required
    • Demonstrate emotional maturity, good moral character, judgement, integrity and leadership
    • Must be attentive to details, be able to work with and meet deadlines, take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities
    • Ability to work within a Christian environment and promote the core values of Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, Caring and Faith
    • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Current CPR & First Aid Certifications including adult, child and infant and obstructed airway maneuver
    • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in such a way as to be easily understood by children, staff and parents
    • Must be customer service oriented and available to serve members, guests & staff
    • Ability to work efficiently independently with little supervision and as part of a team
    • Organizational, time management & Problem/Resolution abilities
    • Valid SC Driver's License

    • Assuring clean & well-maintained department(s) equipment and facilities

    • Positive attitude and enthusiastic performance of duties
    • Accurate and up-to-date paperwork, records, program set-u, schedules, etc
    • Assuring Safety & liability of programs/staff/participants
    • Attention to detail and follow through in the execution of all job components
    • Effectiveness will also be measured by the extent to which the incumbent is a supportive staff member achieving the goals of the YMCA of Sumter
