ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Manager, Facilities & Operations, The Park Coordinator Supervisory administers the work associated with the Park it is specifically assigned to; plan and development of visitor facilities, programs and services; coordinate registration, public safety and emergency processes; support Parks and Special Places (P&SP) programs; coordinate maintenance and operations activities; work with Community, and Nunavut Joint Planning and Management Committees (C/NJPMCs), public interest groups and organizations; identify, marketing and promoting visitor tourism and recreational opportunities; and contract for required services and construction in support of these activities.
There are five main program areas in the Parks and Special Places division: Program Development, Planning & Establishment, Facilities & Operations, Heritage Appreciation, and Heritage Rivers. P&SP also shares a departmental role in a sixth program area: Conservation. Although overlapping and interactions exist, this position falls under the Park Facilities & Operations.
In supporting the protection of Nunavut's natural and cultural heritage and promoting opportunities for recreation and healthy living, this position coordinates all the assigned Park's operations and visitor services. In recognition that parks are public facilities, services and assets, this position also concurrently enforces legislative and resource management and capital budget planning processes; manages projects specific to the assigned Park and other parks as required; and coordinates contracting services and construction activities for the assigned Park.
The Park Coordinator – Supervisory supports the protection and use of the assigned Territorial Park's natural and cultural resources in keeping with Territorial legislation, the Nunavut Agreement (NA), and Inuit Impact Benefits Agreement (IIBA); directs the operation of the assigned Park and related Park visitor services and facilities; enforces government regulations and legislation compliance; supports the Manager Park Facilities & Operations, in development and implementation of a Park Registration System and Emergency Response Plan to ensure visitor safety and enjoyment; assists in developing and implementing the Capital Planning Program; actively engages the community in conservation and promotes heritage appreciation; and coaching/Supervision.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through an Undergraduate Degree in Environmental Technology, Environmental Planning and Design, Environmental Studies or equivalent in a related field. Plus, two (2) years' experience in natural resource management, environmental planning agencies, park management planning or a related field including one (1) year of progressive supervisory experience.
First Aid and CPR Certification is considered an asset.
Wilderness First Aid Certification is considered an asset.
Valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) is considered an asset.
This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
