Provides reliable, efficient, and cost-effective collection, transportation, and disposal of material. This position is responsible for providing service to residential and commercial customers and is required to be able to operate the equipment required to complete this work. Drivers will typically have an assigned route and as needed, will perform related tasks. Work is performed under the general direction of the Solid Waste Manager, Solid Waste Superintendent and Solid Waste Supervisors.Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with airbrakes endorsement by the date of hire

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Following successful completion of training or equivalent, operates two (2) Solid Waste vehicles, one (1) being a primary Solid Waste Collection vehicle to collect material along an assigned route within the prescribed time. Annually, completes a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of retraining to operate two (2) primary Solid Waste Collection vehicles.Ensures that assigned collection vehicle is operated safely and efficiently. Performs daily pre-trip inspections of equipment, records findings and evaluates the operational fitness of equipment.Transports collected refuse to the disposal point as often as required, and accounting for weight tickets for each trip.Reports any containers requiring service or repair, access problems, non-standard garbage accumulation, and service delivery problems timely.Performs inventory and maintenance of all special equipment (Fire Extinguishers, etc.) placed on vehicles and the proper use and operation of the communications system.Maintains communication with Solid Waste Supervisors and customer service staff.Collects all authorized material properly placed in a City owned automated container, dumpster or roll-off or Customer owned garbage container at authorized stops along the assigned route.Prevents litter due to spillage or scattering of refuse as a result of the performance of his/her duties.Resolves to not engage in any scavenging activities.Reports any accidents in which his/her vehicle is involved immediately.Maintains and cleans departmental trucks for which personal responsibility has been assigned. Washes, cleans, greases, and fuels all vehicles operated or as assigned.Provides assistance and support to all department programs which effect solid waste collection.Ensures that a public impression created by his/her appearance and performance, and that of the vehicle is professional.Operates other solid waste collection vehicles or equipment on a temporary or emergency basis. (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned, including City directed work assignments in the event of a declared emergency. )

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Education and Experience: High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.One (1) year of experience operating similar equipment.(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.) Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with airbrakes endorsement by the date of hire.Emergency Response ResponsibilityEvery City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description.
