SUMMARY
The Pharmacy Technician supports the business by overseeing the day-to-day main pharmacy activity, which includes the preparation, dispensing, inventory and compliance of pharmaceuticals and associated medical supplies. This role ensures medications are dispensed accurately, controlled substances are managed in compliance with DEA and state regulations, and inventory remains organized, secure, and cost-effective. The Pharmacy Technician works closely with the ambulatory, hospital and surgery veterinarians and technicians to provide a consistently positive experience with regards to pharmacy operations and inventory management. In addition, they will oversee vendor relationships with our pharmaceutical distributors. This position is well-suited for someone looking to utilize their technical, interpersonal, workflow, and organizational skills in a veterinary environment. Certified Pharmacy Technician with inventory management and equine and/or veterinary business experience is preferred. The ideal candidate operates independently while working to achieve team goals and has a passion for attention to detail and organization. This role works alongside our Office Services Senior Specialist, our lab team, and the management team, in addition to regularly interfacing with Veterinarians, Technicians, and all office staff members from all company locations. The role is part of the Finance department and reports to the Financial Controller.Responsibilities broadly include pharmacy operations and compliance, medication dispensing and preparation, controlled substance management, and inventory and procurement. This position ensures these functions utilize B.W. Furlong & Associates Core Values as a guide for all interactions and acts as a resource across business locations. This is a full time (40+ hours/week), non-exempt, hourly position with a salary range of $23-$28/per hour.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Pharmacy Operations & Compliance
- Maintain clean and organized pharmacy spaces
- Accurately fill pharmaceutical stock requests from veterinarians and technicians
- Prepare oral, injectable and topical medications as requested
- Follow FDA, AVMA, USEF/FEI and state pharmacy regulations
Management of controlled substances
Oversee DEA-compliant logs/Vet Snap records and reconciliations of controlled substances
- Manage locked storage systems and ensure custody compliance
- Perform weekly counts of controlled substances
- Assist with preparing for DEA audits
- Hazardous waste compliance and reporting
Inventory & Procurement
Manage full inventory lifecycle for all pharmaceuticals, vaccines and medical supplies
Assist in managing pharmacy vendor relations, including contracts/renewals and rebate analysis
- Oversee stocking, receiving, ordering, and dispensing
- Oversee approval and reconciliation of vendor invoices
- Assist in physical inventory truck inspections, including protocol and policies, summarizing results, and communicating findings
- Centralize procurement workflows, approvals and systems
- Support inventory procurement policy standardization by collaborating with Office Services to create consistent documentation
- Member of Practice Management Software support team for inventory related needs
- Manage the outgoing shipping process for pharmaceuticals and reproduction items to ensure timely, accurate and intact deliveries
Client, Lab & Hospital Support
- Assist veterinarians and technicians with any product knowledge requests and alternative product solutions
- Administer external online pharmacy approvals for clients
- Assist in fulfillment of internal Furlong Healthy Horse orders
- Participate on Safety Committee

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
- 3 - 5 years pharmacy technician or medical inventory experience in a high volume, fast-paced environment, preferably in the equine industry
- Ability to perform accurate measurements and calculations
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Ability to effectively negotiate, network and build relationships with vendors
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on feet for extended hours
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver exceptional client service
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, and LICENSING:
- Knowledge and experience in the equine veterinary industry to include exposure to business support functions, and the ability to demonstrate professionalism at all times.
- Possession of a valid New Jersey or other U.S. State-issued driver's license.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
