The Opportunity

Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Third Class Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of critical utilities and building systems supporting a large-scale GMP certified hybrid greenhouse. This includes boiler and heating systems, refrigeration/chilled water, HVAC/dehumidification, and automated control systems. Working within a regulated production environment, this role ensures equipment performance, compliance, and rapid response to alarms and operational upsets.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations & Monitoring

  • Operate and monitor central plant and building systems including boilers/steam or hydronic heating, refrigeration/chilled water, HVAC, air handling, and dehumidification systems.

  • Operate and respond to BAS/automation alarms, performing first response troubleshooting and corrective actions.

  • Monitor plant equipment and utilities performance using field rounds and BAS trends (temperature, flow, pressure, DP, amps, levels).

  • Analyze and document equipment conditions, identify abnormal operation, take corresponding actions to ensure safe 24-7 operation and maintain required environmental conditions.

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance (PMs) and minor repairs on facility equipment including pumps, motors, compressors, valves, switches, gauges, meters, and controls.

  • Clean, lubricate, and adjust mechanical equipment to maintain reliability and reduce downtime.

  • Support contractors and service vendors during planned maintenance and breakdowns.

  • Maintain tools, parts, and work areas in a safe and audit-ready condition.

Compliance, Documentation & Safety

  • Document the continuous operation and monitoring of the bulk physical plant as per industrial best practice, TSSA regulatory requirements, internal asset management and work order system SOPs, and insurance requirements.Support development and improvement of SOPs, safe work procedures, and lockout/tagout practices.

  • Ensure activities comply with TSSA Operating Engineers Regulations (O. Reg. 219/01) and applicable refrigeration code requirements.

  • Document that boilers, chillers, pressure vessels and fuels safety TSSA regulations are complied with, and manage certification renewals and documentation for regulated devices in the TSSA portal.

  • Participate in incident response and root cause investigations as required.

Cross-Functional Support

  • Work closely with cultivation/operations teams to ensure environmental setpoints are maintained and deviations are addressed quickly.

  • Support continuous improvement efforts focused on energy efficiency, system reliability, and operational resilience.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid Third Class Operating Engineer Certificate, or a Fourth Class Operating Engineer Certificate with the opportunity and willingness to work towards Third Class certification.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of TSSA O. Reg. 219/01 and safe operating practices.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills with ability to diagnose mechanical and control system issues.

  • Able to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and P&IDs.

  • Comfortable working with digital systems (BAS/SCADA, CMMS, Microsoft Office).

  • Experience in large-scale industrial facilities (greenhouse, food, pharma, manufacturing, utilities) preferred.

  • Experience with low pressure boilers, pumps, compressors, cooling towers, heat exchangers, large scale hydronic systems, electronic controls, and PLCs preferred.

  • Familiarity with air handling units — central plant connected and unitary. Preferred.

  • Experience working in regulated environments where documentation and controlled processes matter preferred.

Other Details

This is a full-time position based out of Tiverton, Ontario.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $85,000 CAD
