Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, the Manager, Networks will:
- The Network Manager is the primary architect and steward of the University's network infrastructure.
- Design, Maintenance and Optimization of high-density Wi-Fi for 10,000+ concurrent devices and the high-capacity wired backbone infrastructure to support seamless campus-wide connectivity.
- This role is responsible for the strategic design, 24/7/365 reliability, and high-density performance of the campus-wide wired and wireless networks.
- The Manager ensures the Network team and SMU's technology backbone can handle the rigorous demands of modern teaching and learning, critical administration tasks, and data-intensive research.
- Serve as the Tier 3 escalation point for complex, campus-wide network issues, providing expert troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Liaise with strategic partners (e.g., ACORN-NS, CANARIE, Azure, Ellucian) to maintain and scale critical connectivity for the institution's commercial, research, and hosted services.
- Responsible for budget preparation for the unit and management of assigned staff.
- Monitors perimeter firewalls, Network Access Control (NAC), Remote Access solutions, and integration with 3rd party security vendors to ensure a robust 'zero trust' posture.
Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Manager, Networks you will have:
- Undergraduate Degree
- Minimum three years of directly related experience
- Project management
- Demonstrated ability in leading a team of IT Specialists and working under deadlines
- Management experience in a unionized environment
- A combination of education and experience will be considered
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work in fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Knowledge of Networking technologies and standards
- Knowledge of Higher Education partners such as CANARIE, ACORN-NS, ONCHEC would be considered an asset.
- Technology certifications such as: Aruba, Fortinet, Cisco.
