This position works at the Ruan Campus located downtown Des Moines, IA and includes up to 25% travel

In collaboration with other senior leaders of the company, create, provide and maintain a vision and the overall objectives for an effective safety program for the company. Assure continuous improvement of the company's safety performance. Provide vision and leadership for all safety personnel for Ruan. Assure the company has the training, know-how, tools and resources required to cost-effectively attain the vision and objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead a strong safety team through effective communications, recruiting, training, coaching, counseling, appraising, rewarding, developing, and succession planning. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Develop and implement organizational strategy. Provide vision and leadership for all safety personnel. Direct and coordinate the Safety Department activities. Establish, monitor and control annual budgets and business planning.
  • Develop, implement and maintain effective safety programs, policies and procedures designed to achieve the company's objectives and comply with regulations.
  • Develop educational resources to be used for internal developments in safety. Continually monitor, analyze, and modify to ensure effectiveness. Train and educate management personnel with regard to the implementation and continuous improvement of the Ruan safety standards.
  • Investigate special and common causes of problems in safety and follow up with problem resolution action plans.
  • Provide timely reports to management identifying key trends and methods to address and resolve negative developments.
  • Communicate with customers, the industry, the general public and regulatory agencies in respect to the company safety culture and policies. Represent Ruan at governmental and industry meetings, conventions, seminars and trade shows.
  • Develop good working relationships within Ruan to help identify and overcome internal barriers to safety improvement.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Requirements:

Job Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:

Education:Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience in Transportation Safety; General Management; Supply Chain Management

Experience: 10+ years leadership experience in safety and transportation

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to commit to Ruan's value statement by acting with integrity in everything we do.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead large teams comprised of professional skilled employees. Demonstrated ability to design and implement loss prevention programs in accordance with OSHA, DOT, and State and Federal regulations. Ability to set priorities and accomplish duties with little supervision and direction. Strong analytical skills.
