Job Summary
The Program Lead is expected to lead and coordinate camp activities for children ages 5–12 in a safe, inclusive environment. Mentor staff, create engaging programs, and ensure camper well-being. Serve as the main contact for parents and staff to deliver a positive camp experience.
The position will start in January 2026. Pre-summer training will take place between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm.
Hours and Pay
- January–April: 10–15 hrs/week; May–August: 30–40 hrs/week; $17.50/hr.

The Program Lead is expected to work independently within District policies.

Program Development & Implementation
- Design and lead age-appropriate camp programs for children ages 5-12
- Create weekly themes that are engaging and memorable
- Plan and execute games, crafts, outdoor activities, and educational sessions
- Prepares, leads, and participates in recreational activities, both active and passive, for school-age children, such as games, sports, arts and crafts, and songs, at an assigned day camp location.
Staff Supervision & Mentorship
- Lead and supervise camp counselors and Leaders in Training
- Provide training in age-appropriate counseling and activity facilitation
- Coordinate staff schedules and ensure effective communication
- Provide non-biased and fair direction to Junior Leaders, and act as a role model.
- Desire to work collaboratively on a team
Camper Engagement & Safety
- Ensure the emotional and physical safety of all campers
- Supervises and accounts for assigned participants at the day camp location.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and respectful camp culture
- Manage camper behavior and resolve conflicts
- Maintains a sincere interest in providing each child with a positive summer camp experience
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate records (attendance, incident reports, schedules)
- Follows safety procedures and renders first aid as ; responds to emergencies as they arise and follow emergency procedures to ensure that accidents and incidents are promptly documented and reported.
- Coordinate check-in/check-out procedures and communicate with parents
- Monitor inventory and manage camp resources
- Maintain a positive and professional demeanor with campers, parents, and staff.
- Serve as primary contact for parents and staff to ensure smooth communication.
- Attends all preseason and ongoing staff meetings and training sessions.
- Actively encourage and live the District's mission.
- Position may also perform other nonessential duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Knowledge of recreational activities appropriate for school-age children. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, parents, and volunteers. Leadership and organizational skills. Ability to use independent judgment and take appropriate action to ensure children's and staff's safety. Flexibility, patience, and a team-oriented mindset.
Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations.
- Minimum Experience : This is an entry-level position. A valid work permit may be for applicants under the age of 18. Previous experience working with children (volunteer work, babysitting, playing sports, coaching, etc.) is preferred (but not )
- Other requirements: State law requires all selected applicants 18 and over to be fingerprinted and pass a pre-employment background check. A TB test clearance is for all selected applicants. Reliable transportation to and from work. First Aid/CPR/AED Training or willingness to complete/recertify (preferred)
Licenses/Certification
- Preferred possession of a valid class C California Driver's license.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desired but not .
Environmental Conditions
- Outdoor recreational facilities; frequent public contact; exposure to sun, heat, and inclement weather. The schedule may vary.
- Position will be 60% Indoor and 40% Outdoor January-April and 10% Indoor and 90% Outdoor May-August.
Physical Conditions
- Strength, mobility, and stamina to bend, reach, stretch, stand, kneel, walk, run, stoop, lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 30 pounds while monitoring children and participating in camp activities. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- The job involves 30% standing and 70% walking or active movement.
- Must occasionally have the ability to feel the attributes of objects by touch; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling; and be able to walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and stand.
- Strength, mobility, and stamina to perform various physical activities.
- Hearing and speech are adequate to communicate in person and over the phone.
- Vision adequate to monitor children and read fine print.
- Manual dexterity to grasp and hold objects, use fine manipulation, write, and operate the telephone.
- Frequently participates in strenuous physical activities, such as running, sports, and other related camp activities, in outdoor locations. Frequent monitoring of children requires the ability to detect and respond to emergencies and provide CPR or First Aid as .
Equipment Used
- Telephone, equipment cart, arts and crafts supplies, and sports equipment.
Transportation Requirements
- Reliable transportation required; ability to travel between park locations.
Terms Of Employment
- This is a seasonal position. This position ends in August 2026.
- State law requires that the applicant selected for the position must complete the fingerprint process to check for or verify a conviction record; TB test clearance is also .
