Mandatory Position
This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position serves as the Grounds Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic – with responsibility for the maintenance and repair of multiple type of vehicles (gas, diesel, and electric powered), as well as 200+ types of specialized grounds and playing fields motorized equipment ranging from two-stroke string trimmers, lawn movers, and blowers up to diesel skid loaders, backhoes, and tractors. Additionally, this position conducts research into new and/or necessary replacement equipment and parts, identifies necessary specifications and acquires quotes from vendors.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the field of work related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Essential Job Duties
- This position serves as the Grounds Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic – with responsibility for the maintenance and repair of multiple type of vehicles (gas, diesel, and electric powered), as well as 200+ types of specialized grounds and playing fields motorized equipment ranging from two-stroke string trimmers, lawn movers, and blowers up to diesel skid loaders, backhoes, and tractors.
- Replaces hydraulic lines, rebuild hydraulic cylinders and pumps on heavy equipment.
- Services and replaces components on pullers and heavy hoist machinery.
- Welding, shaping, and fabricating using Stick and Mig welding.
- Primary preparer and maintenance coordinator for all FM Snow equipment: Training all FM staff, on how to operate the equipment.
- Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice trees, etc., during inclement weather, usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays. Sometimes requires early morning travel in marginal weather conditions and long working hours.
Other Work Responsibilities
- Locating parts and getting quotes for all equipment repairs. Tracking throughout the ordering process and make sure we receive the parts in a timely manner and that they are correct.
- Responsible for keeping track of our inventory for all equipment, parts, and tools.
- Periodically, evaluates current equipment and determines what has aged out and needs to be replaced.
- Performs surplus process for aged equipment, work with asset management with a list of equipment with pictures of each, with the model and serial number & asset tag. Compile all this info and get it to asset management to start the surplus procedure. Status checks with Surplus.
- Assists with loading/unloading materials with a skid steer/forklift as needed.
- Attends all training opportunities provided to increase technical grounds maintenance, and supervisory skills.
- Performs equipment rescues in the field for stranded equipment or emergency repairs as needed.
- Conducts research into new and/or necessary replacement equipment and parts, identifies necessary specifications and acquires quotes from vendors.
- Assists the irrigation manager with installation's or repairs as needed.
- Assists the arborist with tree work/removal as needed.
- Assists the construction crew with any projects as needed.
- Assists with the moving of office furniture, and help with special event setups and tear downs.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
- Experience and skills in the maintenance and repair of all grounds and playing field equipment, includes all gasoline, diesel, and electric powered equipment, ranging from a 2-stroke string trimmer up to diesel skid loaders, backhoes, and tractors.
- Experience in locating parts and obtaining quotes for all equipment repairs; tracking throughout the ordering process and ensuring accurate and timely delivery of parts.
- Knowledge and intermediate skills with Google Chrome, Google sheets, Microsoft Word and Excel, computer literate and willingness to learn new programs.
- Effective interpersonal communications skills in both written and verbal needed for the position.
- Ability to effectively work/interact in a team environment which will foster an atmosphere of teamwork.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
- Valid driver's license required. The Vehicle Equipment Repair Tech operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
