POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Facilities Specialist supports the maintenance, preservation and repair of all buildings and related infrastructure within the cemetery grounds. This role plays a key part in ensuring that facilities are safe, functional and clean.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine maintenance, minor to moderate repairs, and inspections of buildings, including offices, chapels, mausoleums, storage areas, restrooms and visitor facilities.
- Assist with preservation and upkeep of historic structures, in coordination with conservation standards and guidelines.
- Conduct regular checks on HVAC, plumbing, lighting, and security systems; report malfunctions and assist contractors as needed.
- Help set up and support public events, funerals, and ceremonies, including temporary facilities, signage, and equipment.
- Maintain irrigation well pumps and control system.
- Monitor record solar energy/NetZero data in Welcome Center.
- Monitor boilers and maintain records.
- Triage and prioritize problem solving with building mechanical systems.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in and around cemetery buildings.
- Monitor inventory and replenish maintenance and janitorial supplies.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and cemetery regulations.
- Support seasonal tasks such as winterization, pest control, and landscape interface near structures.
- Assist in emergency preparedness and response efforts, including storm recovery or unexpected facility damage.
- Document daily activities, inspections, compliance records and work completed.
- Support other departments as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required, vocational training or certification in facilities maintenance a plus
- 2+ years Trade experience (plumbing, HVAC, pipe fitting experience, mechanic)
- Strong mechanical background
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, ladders and maintenance equipment safely
- Good communication skills and a respectful demeanor, particularly around grieving families and public visitors
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, dedicated team
- Ability to learn and operate a complex irrigation and well system and complex building controls
- Holds or is willing to obtain a Minnesota Class C Steam Boiler license
- Holds or is willing to obtain a Minnesota Pollution underground fuel storage certification A or B license
- Ability to learn cemetery layout and locations, and burial and cremation procedures
- Valid Minnesota State Driver's license, and ability to obtain a DOT Health Card if requested
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is expected to perform their duties within the physical demands below:
- Required to sit for periods of time.
- Use hands to grasp, lift, feel, type, and write.
- Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment and comfortable standing or walking for long periods of time
- Crouching/squatting and/or balancing using one's wrists.
- Must be able to lift to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
- Close vision, distance vision and depth perception.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee will work mainly on-site. This position requires both indoor and outdoor work throughout the year in varying weather conditions. The cemetery is a site of active visitation and historic preservation, requiring professionalism, discretion, and sensitivity at all times.
WORK SCHEDULE
Regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM. Occasional evening and weekend rotation will be required.
COMPENSATION
$25 - $30 per hour, based on experience.
