Job Summary
Perform, coordinate, and oversee construction activities, supervising journeymen, apprentices, and construction workers to ensure work is completed accurately, timely, and safely. This position requires strong leadership and hands-on experience with concrete pouring, drilling, and installation of large highway signage. The ideal candidate will be able to supervise drilling operations, guide crews on proper drilling locations and methods, and step in to perform work when needed.
Responsibilities
Operate heavy equipment, such as drill rig, backhoe, ditch witch, rock saw, bucket truck, and other mobile equipment to dig, move materials, lift large and heavy materials, and compact/level earth to grade specifications.
Operate large and small motor vehicles to transport material, equipment, and supplies.
Use judgment based on experience, along with available resources, to ensure accurate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
Operate hand and power tools, measuring devices, and other equipment.
Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed.
Oversee and participate in drilling operations, ensuring drilling is performed in correct locations and in accordance with safety and engineering standards.
Lead and assist crews with concrete pouring, finishing, and curing, ensuring quality, precision, and compliance with project specifications.
Supervise and guide laborers in installation of large highway signs, ensuring proper placement, alignment, and anchoring.
Ensure all drilling and installation equipment is maintained and used safely.
Plan, coordinate, and supervise work activities of assigned crew.
Estimate material or worker requirements to complete jobs.
Ensure all material and equipment needed are available to complete the job prior to beginning work.
Assign work based on employee qualifications and job procedures.
Ensure the worksite is safe for work and perform all required safety duties.
Inspect work progress, equipment, and construction sites to ensure all specifications are met.
Record and submit personnel, production, equipment, and other operational data on specified forms, reports, and systems.
Assist workers engaged in construction activities, using hand tools and other equipment.
Qualifications
At least three years of construction experience, required
At least one year in a lead role providing guidance and direction to less senior crew members, required
Demonstrated leadership experience in concrete pouring and drilling operations, required
Experience supervising drilling and installation of large structures such as highway signage, strongly preferred
Valid Class C driver license and a clean driving record, required
Highway construction experience, preferred
Previous experience as a foreman, preferred
Valid Texas commercial driver license, preferred
Bilingual – Spanish/English, preferred
Required Competencies:
Advanced understanding of construction practices and use of tools and equipment in construction
Strong knowledge of concrete and drilling procedures, site layout, and installation techniques
Ability to understand and utilize construction plan documents
Basic computer skills using email and construction and fleet software
Basic mathematical skills
Effective leadership skills with the ability to appropriately motivate subordinate employees
Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to organize own work and that of others
Ability to provide and comprehend oral and written instructions
Working Environment:
Work is performed in primarily outdoor environments with constant exposure to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and temperature extremes
Mobile Equipment:
Position is assigned a company vehicle.
Physical Demands:
Frequent operation of heavy equipment with vibrating and moving parts.
Frequent and repeated hand and arm movement to manipulate tools, handles, and levers.
Frequent and repeated lifting from ground to various heights up to 50 pounds individually, and team lifting heavier items.
Frequent and repeated exerting of force up to 100 pounds.
Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Frequent walking on uneven and / or unpaved terrain.
Frequent climbing steps, ladders, and in/out/onto vehicles.
Frequent and repeated bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and crouching.
Visual acuity to drive, distinguish electrical wire colors, perform manual detailed work, and to read printed and electronic documents.
Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to common construction and road environment noises.
Manual dexterity to frequently manipulate, handle, and feel.
Frequent operation of a motor vehicle for extended periods of time up to eight (8) hours per day, driving to and between work locations.
Constant use of personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for working safely.
