About The Role
The Product Engineering team at Disney is responsible for the engineering of digital and streaming products across Disney Entertainment & ESPN. This includes areas such as product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity. Specifically, the Media Engineering division focuses on building software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform, ensuring an optimal playback experience for viewers. This involves handling audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publication, supporting normalization, processing, and packaging. The team develops logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback performance across the entire technology stack.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Media Engineering team, specifically focusing on our Roku playback library. The successful candidate will design, develop, and maintain media playback packages that span Disney's direct-to-consumer brands such as Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. The role involves collaborating with media playback teams across various platforms to ensure a consistent software architecture that delivers a best-in-class streaming experience. The engineer will also contribute to media playback innovation, supporting Disney's strategic vision for its streaming services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical, or Electronics Engineering, or a comparable field of study.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience in software engineering or a similar domain.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present data clearly and effectively.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing applications for Roku using Brightscript.
  • Proven track record in senior or lead software engineering roles.

Preferred qualifications include experience working directly with video playback technologies such as Media Source Extensions (MSE)/Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), HLS, MPEG-DASH, Transport Stream, and CMAF.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new features that integrate seamlessly with various Disney media services and back-end systems.
  • Collaborate with peer teams to design APIs and ensure smooth integration across platforms.
  • Conduct research and development to enhance media playback experiences, including integration and testing.
  • Participate in project planning, team operations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain and update the Roku media playback library, ensuring high performance and reliability.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver a consistent and high-quality streaming experience for viewers.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to media playback, providing timely resolutions.
