District Five is one of six districts of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The boundaries of District Five include the following counties: Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure
the safety of the public as well as efficient highways.
This job is located in the District Five Administrative office in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?
Position will manage the District Five Equipment Section to include management of the Service Center, Heavy Equipment Shop, welding shop, vendor repairs and fleet management in coordination with district management and field personnel.
How does it get done?
Incumbent will manage and oversee employees responsible for maintaining and repairing the District's fleet of heavy equipment and vehicles. Incumbent will ensure that maintenance and repairs for vehicles/equipment are performed regularly and efficiently. The incumbent will also oversee all operations related to the District Service Center, Heavy Equipment Shop and commercial vendor repairs. And lastly the incumbent will oversee an annual repairs budget of approximately $1.0M and the annual Equipment Capital Outlay Budget (ECOB) for the purchase of new and replacement vehicles and equipment for District Five.

Direct Customers are District Five employees (maintenance personnel, construction personnel and office staff). Indirect customers are those who travel the "public state highway system and interstate system" of the state of New Mexico.

Minimum Qualification
Three (3) years of work experience in a repair shop or maintenance facility. Educational experience in automotive service repair may substitute for required experience. Must possess or obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License, Class A (or equivalent license from another state) within one (1) year of hire.
Employment Requirements
This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License and must have and maintain a New Mexico Class A Commercial Driver's License. Business reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. Work may also be performed outside in varying weather conditions; work irregular hours; subject to call out for emergencies; the incumbent must use computer based diagnostic equipment, read and understand hydraulic schematics and perform necessary repairs with hydraulic gauges. Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to 90 pounds. This position requires frequent travel with overnight stays and maybe required to travel District Wide. Must be available to respond to emergency call outs on short notice.
