Foreman/Class 2 Operator

D&M Owens Inc. is seeking a skilled, dependable, and leadership-minded Foreman and Class 2 Operator to join our Site Development Division. This dual-role position requires someone who can efficiently operate heavy equipment and oversee daily operations for small, specialized site work crews. The ideal candidate is experienced in grading, excavation, and site preparation while also being capable of directing crew members, planning daily tasks, and maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Crew Management

• Lead and supervise a small site development crew on daily tasks and production goals.
• Plan work activities, assign tasks, and communicate expectations clearly.
• Monitor crew performance, quality of work, and compliance with safety protocols.
• Coordinate with the Superintendent regarding schedules, material needs, and project progress.
• Ensure proper job site setup, traffic control, safety measures, and cleanup.
• Train and mentor operators and laborers to support skill development and efficiency.

Equipment Operations (Class 2 Level)

• Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including grader, excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, and rollers.
• Perform grading, trenching, excavation, backfilling, and material placement tasks.
• Execute fine grade work, slopes, pads, building elevations, and roadway cuts.
• Conduct daily pre- and post-operational inspections of equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance such as fueling, greasing, and cleaning machines.

Project Execution

• Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and project specifications.
• Maintain accurate grade elevations and ensure proper drainage and compaction.
• Communicate with truck drivers, operators, and laborers to maintain smooth workflow.
• Identify and troubleshoot problems or delays and adjust plans as needed.
• Maintain a clean and organized job site at all times.

Safety & Compliance

• Enforce and model all D&M Owens Inc. safety policies.
• Ensure all crew members wear required PPE and follow safe operating practices.
• Address unsafe behavior immediately and report incidents to leadership.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3+ years operating heavy equipment in site development or excavation.
• Prior leadership or crew lead experience is strongly preferred.
• Ability to operate multiple machines with high skill, including fine grading experience.
• Strong understanding of site plans, elevations, and grade control.
• Must be dependable, punctual, and able to lead by example.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred but not required.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift 50+ lbs as needed.

Work Environment

• Outdoor construction sites with uneven terrain, weather exposure, and heavy equipment operation.
• Small, specialized crews requiring consistent communication and teamwork.
• Fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Schedule & Pay

• Full-time, Monday–Friday (occasional Saturdays depending on project needs).
• Competitive hourly pay based on experience and operator skill level.
• Overtime available.
