JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Swim Center Manager, ensure patron safety, enforce pool rules and regulations, perform water rescues and administer first aid, as needed. Implement the Emergency Action Plans and notify proper authorities, as required. Assist in general maintenance of cleaning of pool area and equipment. Schedule lifeguard rotations and assignments. Assist in implementing required weekly lifeguard in-service trainings for staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Head Life Guard Duties
  • Follow and enforce facility rules and regulations at all times.

  • Respond quickly to emergency situations to guarantee the safety of pool patrons. Perform appropriate emergency and rescue techniques when necessary including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid in an effective manner to assure proper crisis management.

  • Apply consistent disciplinary action for all violations in a firm, yet courteous manner.

  • Respond to requests, inquiries, and complaints in a cooperative manner that ensures customer satisfaction. Assist staff in addressing issues with patrons; provide excellent community relations.

  • Notify the Swim Center Manager or Assistant Manager on duty of patron misconduct.

  • Observe swimmers from guard stand or pool side; caution swimmers of rule violations and enforce safety rules. While on duty observing swimmers, remain vigilant; perform no other function such as talking on a cell phone or texting.

  • Advise the Swim Center Manager or Assistant Manager on duty when to close pool due to inclement weather.

  • Perform duties of opening and closing the pool facilities. Ensure that all patrons and staff safely leave the facility.

  • Retain by memory details of the Emergency Action Plan and implement it during emergency situations.

  • Plan lifeguard rotations and assignments; assist in implementing lifeguard in-service training sessions; offer feedback and guidance to staff.

  • Encourage staff to use sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids.

  • Provide role model for staff regarding proper dress, professional behavior, and appropriate customer relations.

  • Report any staff on-the-job injury or patron injury to the Swim Center Manager or Assistant Manager on duty and Human Resources.

  • Communicate any staff issues and needs to the Swim Center Manager or Assistant Manager on duty.

  • Exercise proper, calm judgment when dealing with situations that require immediate action.

  • Exercise consistency in following and implementing Swim Center and City policies.

Maintenance
  • Notify the Swim Center Swim Center Manager or Assistant Manager on duty of any needed materials, equipment repairs, and any unsafe conditions.

  • Ensure proper use, care, storage, and maintenance of facility equipment by patrons and lifeguard staff.

  • Make sure restroom maintenance logs and chemical logs are properly completed.

  • Maintain cleanliness of lifeguard break room.

  • Promote a safe environment by performing regular deck checks: roving the deck, checking on staff and patrons throughout the day.

Other Essential Job Functions
  • Demonstrate cooperative behavior with staff, supervisors, and the public.

  • Maintain inventory of First Aid supplies.

  • Assist in special events of the Parks and Recreation Department. Make sure they proceed in a safe manner.

  • Convey a positive professional image by action, communication and appearance.

  • Exhibit regular, reliable and punctual attendance, which is an essential function of the job.

  • Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Experience
  • Minimum of one seasons experience lifeguarding.

  • One year's experience in customer relations (retail, food service, hosting) preferred.

Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of lifesaving and first aid techniques.

  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and response.

  • General safety practices and procedures.

  • The mechanical workings of the swimming pool such as pumps, vacuums, power washers, sprayers, controllers, and backwashing.

Skill/Ability to

  • Swim proficiently. Effectively and efficiently use all lifeguard equipment.

  • Manage emergency situations using good judgment to determine proper response.

  • Retain and effectively utilize the Emergency Action Plan, safety rules, department and City policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Respond effectively to a stressful or high pressure environment. Handle emergency and non-emergency communication in a calm manner.

  • Manage emergency situations and use good judgment in determining proper response.

  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of staff, City officials, vendors, other employees and the general public. Be flexible and diplomatic.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Effectively speak, read and write in the English language.

  • Sit or stand in an alert manner and observe the activities of all patrons of the pool while stationed to the lifeguard stand or a roving position.

  • Use and operate facility-cleaning equipment.

  • Consistently provide excellent public relations and customer service.

  • Be outgoing and enthusiastic in promoting safety and pool programs.

  • Meet multiple deadlines and perform multiple tasks under pressure. Work in a multi-task environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperatures long hours including weekends, holidays and some after hours. Subject to sunburn, and other sun exposure reactions.

  • Must be able to sit in an alert manner and observe the activities of all patrons of the pool while on stand or in a roving position.

  • May be exposed to potential injury from patrons in water emergencies.

  • May require exposure to human body fluids.

  • Must wear a uniform while on duty, must provide own whistle, sunscreen and sunglasses.

  • May be exposed to dust, cleaning agents, materials and equipment.

  • Work requires exposure to pool chemicals and pool equipment.

  • May encounter occasional stressful situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be physically fit enough to perform rescues and other physical requirements of lifeguarding.

  • Must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time while on duty as a lifeguard or working on maintenance projects.

  • Must be able to set up and take down equipment for various activities.

  • Must be able to carry, hold, lift and push pool chemicals and pool equipment up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to use step-stools and ladders to climb into a storage loft to store and retrieve items weighing up to 30 pounds.

  • Must be able to file records and store supplies weighing up to 30 pounds in both low (3 feet) and high (7 feet) standing cabinets and shelves.

  • Must possess mental acuity for attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Must see in the normal visual range with or without correction.

  • Must hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATIONS AND / OR LICENSES
  • Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard or Starguard certification.

  • Valid CPR/First Aid/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.

  • Age must comply with City's personnel guidelines (minimum age for this position is 18).

  • High school diploma or GED required, or current student status.

  • Proof of citizenship and/or eligibility to legally work in the United States.
