POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist plays a vital role in supporting diagnostic services in a critical access hospital. This dual-role position involves specimen collection, basic laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, and administrative duties. The ideal candidate will demonstrate precision, compassion, and adaptability in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
  2. Collect blood samples for routine and specialized testing, including bleeding time tests and blood cultures.
  3. Ensure proper patient identification and specimen labeling.
  4. Prepare specimens for laboratory analysis according to test requirements.
  5. Assist in the Clinical Laboratory with sample processing and basic testing procedures.
  6. Maintain knowledge of test protocols and specimen handling standards.
  7. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and analyzers.
  8. Perform waived tests under supervision and assist technologists as needed.
  9. Conduct routine quality control and equipment checks.
  10. Provide compassionate and professional care during specimen collection.
  11. Educate patients on procedures when necessary.
  12. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  13. Document specimen collection and test results accurately.
  14. Perform clerical tasks including data entry, filing, and phone communication.
  15. Maintain inventory of supplies and ensure readiness of phlebotomy stations.
  16. Follow infection control and safety protocols.
  17. Participate in emergency response procedures and safety drills.
  18. Handle biohazard materials in accordance with hospital policy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORS
Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly and appropriately to department needs.
Needs adequate hearing and visual acuity, including adequate color vision.
Requires fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects.
May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
May require periodic use of personal computer.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School/GED or equivalent working knowledge.

Proficiency in venipuncture and skin puncture techniques.

Knowledge of specimen handling and test requirements. Familiarity with safety protocols and infection control. Use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for communication and reporting. Email management and calendar scheduling.

Fast and accurate typing skills for entering patient and specimen data. Attention to detail to avoid errors in labeling and documentation.

Ability to interact professionally with patients and staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification preferred.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred
