Job Summary

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual tasks as part of a crew engaged in the maintenance and upkeep of public parks, grounds, facilities, streets, and/or infrastructure. Specific job functions will vary based on the department. Work is physical in nature and under the direct supervision of a Crew Supervisor or Leader.

Essential Job Functions

The specific manual work performed varies by department, and may include grounds maintenance, parks maintenance, street maintenance, sanitation services, or facility maintenance. The employee assists equipment operators, skilled-trade employees, or other workers as needed.

1. General Maintenance and Landscaping
  • Grounds: Mows grass; trims and edges along roadways, driveways, and sidewalks; plants, prunes, and maintains trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Debris Removal: Picks up and disposes of tree limbs, brush, dead animals, debris, and litter from public areas; empties trash containers.
  • Grounds Materials: Spreads seed, mulch, and other materials; tills or aerates dirt/soil; moves dirt and grades land; cuts, lays, or installs sod; applies fertilizer and herbicide.
  • Manual Labor: Rakes ground materials; blows leaves/debris; digs ditches/trenches; and shovels materials.
2. Work-Site Setup and Clean-up
  • Gathers necessary equipment, tools, supplies, and materials.
  • Empties trash containers and dumpsters.
  • Rakes, sweeps, shovels, and cleans the ground around work areas.
  • Cleans and returns equipment and materials to their proper location.
3. Equipment Operation

Operates a variety of light equipment, machinery, and power/hand tools, including (but not limited to):

  • Small tractor
  • Commercial mower, edger, trimmer, tiller, sod cutter
  • Chipper, chain saw, leaf blower
  • Air compressor, concrete saw, asphalt loop
  • Paint/marking machine
  • Standard tools: pick axe, sledgehammer, pitchfork, rake, post hole digger, shovel, broom
  • Two-way radio
4. Equipment Maintenance
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance (e.g., inspecting, checking/replacing fluids, refueling, greasing, sharpening blades, washing).
  • Monitors equipment to maintain efficiency and safety.
  • Reports faulty equipment and initiates requests for replacement materials.
5. Safety and Communication
  • Follows established safety procedures and utilizes safety equipment.
  • Sets up work zones and flags/directs traffic around work-sites.
  • Assists in monitoring traffic conditions surrounding trucks/equipment.
  • Reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Communicates with supervisors, other departments, employees, and the public as needed.
6. Documentation
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, time cards, and daily work sheets.
  • Receives and processes documentation (e.g., schedules, policies, manuals).
Department-Specific Functions
Recreation & Parks
  • Park/Field Maintenance: Cleans and maintains athletic fields, bleachers, courts, playgrounds, and trails; drags ball fields; applies lines/markings.
  • Building Maintenance: Cleans buildings, sheds, and restrooms; restocks supplies; paints surfaces; replaces batteries, light bulbs, and ballasts; performs minor repairs on fixtures and equipment; assembles furniture.
  • Events: Assists with setup and breakdown for special events and activities.
Transportation
  • Street/Roadway: Prepares road surfaces for asphalt; lays and smooths asphalt; patches/repairs utility cuts and potholes.
  • Concrete Work: Lays bricks and concrete block; lays or builds concrete forms for catch-basins, sidewalks, and curbing; pours concrete.
  • Drainage: Clears obstructions and removes debris from storm-water drains, ditches, and catch-basins.
  • Other: Constructs asphalt driveway tie-ins; repairs/installs guardrails.

Education/Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent

Three (3) years of experience in grounds/facility maintenance, landscaping, equipment operation, or construction/maintenance work.

Licenses/Certifications

Valid Georgia driver's license with a satisfactory MVR.

Possession of Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Dept. Specific

Transportation: Obtain and maintain a Flagging Certification.

Transportation: Experience in concrete and asphalt work.

  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in semi-routine situations.

  • Sensory: Requires the ability to perceive and discriminate colors/shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues/signals.
Work Environment

Work is regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as:

  • Dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes.
  • Fumes, heights, machinery, vibrations, electric currents.
  • Traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or animal attacks/bites.
