For nearly a decade, TransitMatters has taken a technical yet people-centric approach to improving public transit in and around Greater Boston. We offer new perspectives, unite transit advocates, and inform the public. We utilize a high level of critical analysis to advocate for plans and policies that promote convenient, effective, and equitable transportation for everyone.

What the Communications Manager will do:

Working in a hybrid environment and reporting to the

Executive Director

, the

Communications Manager

will

be responsible for TransitMatters' public presence and online visibility. The Communications Manager will build on the successful branding work of previous employees and volunteers, while developing a strong, cohesive identity that advances the TransitMatters brand. 

A self-starter with strong written and visual communication skills, with a background in social media, will excel in this role. Prior technical knowledge of issues relevant to TransitMatters' work, including land use, mode shift, fare policy, and transportation planning, as well as fundraising experience, is not required but would be helpful.

Key Responsibilities:

Online Communication Leadership: 40%

  • Manage and enhance TransitMatters' social media presence across multiple platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn) on a day-to-day basis.
  • Design, maintain, and code the appearance and functionality of responsive pages on the website, aligning with TransitMatters' visual identity.
  • Identify emerging social media trends and propose strategies for TransitMatters to take advantage of them.
  • Lead day-to-day community engagement and collect feedback from online audiences.
  • Monitor performance metrics and analyze engagement data to measure success and identify areas for improvement.

Content Creation & Storytelling: 40%

  • Develop, write, and produce original digital content that reflects the voice and mission of TransitMatters.
  • Design digital and print marketing materials for a variety of events, social media initiatives, and reports.
  • Create short-form video content, from development to filming, post-production, and online distribution.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and supporter networks to gather stories and content ideas that promote TransitMatters' advocacy and policy initiatives.
  • Assist with photography at events and maintain a collection of staff, volunteer leads, and board member headshots.

External Contracts: 10-15%

  • Manage communication outreach requests from external stakeholders, from brief to completion, controlling and owning the quality of the creative work you deliver.
  • Schedule the distribution of physical and digital communications materials; delegate tasks to interns and volunteers.
  • Attend and actively participate in regular meetings with external stakeholders.

Strategic Planning: 5-10%

  • Advance the organization's visibility and engagement with diverse audiences through a cross-platform communication strategy.
  • Use Race Class Narrative to mobilize TransitMatters' base and attract new supporters.
  • Track TransitMatters' support and donor bases and identify growth opportunities.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Coordinating with public relations firms on media requests and press releases for report releases, data tool launches, significant data findings, etc.
  • Staffing events and attending meetings outside of traditional working hours.
  • Managing interns and fostering working relationships with key volunteers.
  • Leading the Events Committee and supporting the Development Committee.
  • Distributing physical materials to locations around the Greater Boston area.

Required qualifications:

  • Experience & Education:

Relevant professional experience in communications, digital content creation, and/or marketing, or a related degree in Communications, Public Relations, and/or Journalism.
- Technical Expertise:

Proficiency with design software (InDesign, Illustrator, and Canva), video editing software (Premiere Pro or Capcut), and email broadcasting tools. Experience with advocacy software, such as EveryAction, and HTML and CSS is desirable.
- Advocacy & Engagement:

Demonstrated passion for TransitMatters' mission and familiarity with the MBTA and the Greater Boston area; Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to present findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. Grant writing experience is a plus.
- Management Skills:

Exceptional attention to detail, strong self-starter capabilities, and proven ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
