Summary
Sets up and operates portable line boring equipment, conventional machining tools, and special-purpose machines to repair, restore, or fabricate bores on metallic components. Performs precision measurement, alignment, and machining to restore equipment to manufacturer specifications. May also operate CNC machining centers as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned.
- Reviews and interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts to determine bore dimensions, tolerances, tool paths, and setup requirements.
- Sets up, aligns, and operates portable line boring machines on heavy equipment, structural components, and assemblies both in-shop and on-site.
- Measures and marks reference points, bore centers, alignment positions, and tooling requirements.
- Selects, aligns, and secures boring bars, cutting tools, fixtures, and accessories for line boring equipment and conventional machines (mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, etc.).
- Calculates and sets machining parameters including speed, feed rates, and depth of cut.
- Safely positions portable boring jigs and large components using overhead cranes, rigging, jacks, and clamps.
- Performs trial runs to verify alignment, tool accuracy, and machine setup before machining final dimensions.
- Monitors machining operations for correct cutting conditions, tool wear, and dimensional accuracy; makes adjustments as needed.
- Uses precision measuring tools (micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, calipers) to verify bore size, alignment, roundness, and finish.
- Documents completed work, measurements, and any corrective actions.
- Communicates with Supervisor, Engineering, and Production Control to resolve machining or assembly issues.
- Complies with all company policies, safety procedures, PPE requirements, and quality standards.
- Follows proper tool checkout and equipment maintenance procedures.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum 2 years of machining experience, preferably with boring operations, conventional machining, or heavy equipment repair.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Strong understanding of machining principles, cutting speeds, feeds, tooling, and alignment.
- Experience using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, and dial indicators.
- Ability to safely use overhead cranes, rigging, jacks, and lifting devices.
- Basic computer and documentation skills.
Preferred:
- Formal machinist or industrial technology training or apprenticeship.
- Experience with portable line boring equipment (Climax, York, Boretech, Mirage, or similar).
- CNC machining experience (setup or operation).
- Welding and fabrication experience (ID welding, bore buildup, etc.).
- Forklift certification or crane/rigging training.
- Mechanical repair experience on heavy equipment or industrial machinery.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally (with assistance or mechanical aids).
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, or work in awkward positions for extended periods.
- Must be able to work on elevated surfaces, uneven ground, or confined areas when required.
- Good manual dexterity for handling tools, operating machinery, and precision measuring.
- Visual acuity for inspecting parts, reading instruments, and performing precision machining.
- Ability to wear required PPE such as safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, and hearing protection.
Work Environment
- Work performed in both machine shop and field/on-site environments.
- Exposure to loud noise, vibration, moving machinery, metal chips, coolant, grease, and welding fumes.
- Work may occur in varying conditions including heat, cold, dust, and outdoor weather depending on job assignment.
- Requires adherence to strict safety procedures and awareness of heavy equipment and overhead lifting hazards.
- May involve occasional overtime, weekend work, or travel to customer sites.
