Principal Software Engineer

About the Opportunity:

The organization is seeking a Principal Software Engineer with expertise in distributed systems to join the Operational Database team. The team is responsible for the development and support of large-scale operational database solutions, including projects such as Apache HBase, Phoenix, and ZooKeeper. The role involves designing core features, supporting enterprise customers, and leading engineering initiatives across international teams.

Responsibilities:

• Design and implement core features for Apache HBase, Apache Phoenix, and operational database projects

• Identify issues, analyze and implement fixes to improve robustness and reliability

• Support enterprise customers managing large-scale operational database systems

• Collaborate with engineering leaders, product managers, and cross-functional teams to turn requirements into effective designs and solutions

• Integrate updates from Apache HBase, Phoenix, and ZooKeeper into the organization's distribution

• Lead and mentor a group of engineers, including junior team members

• Coordinate with global team members to ensure seamless platform operations

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent and 10+ years of relevant experience

• Expertise in backend engineering with strong Java, or strong C++ and intermediate Java skills

• Experience in system software design and development, including computer architecture, storage, networking, I/O subsystems, and distributed systems

• Proficient in data structures and algorithms

• Hands-on experience in Linux environments

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills suitable for distributed teams

• Proven leadership ability in large-scale project ownership

Preferred:

• Experience with distributed database systems, NoSQL storage, and performance tuning

• Knowledge of the Apache Big Data ecosystem and over 3 years of experience in database systems

• Recognized contributions to open source projects

• Experience with HBase, Phoenix, Accumulo, Cassandra, or similar technologies

• Understanding of database development, scaling, and performance optimization

• Experience with cloud infrastructure
