About Newport Medical Solutions
Newport Medical Solutions (NewportMed) is not your average billing company. Since 2004, we have specialized in the "heavy lifting" of the medical world: surgical and high-complexity specialty practices. We operate with a boutique mindset, meaning we provide a level of white-glove service and technical expertise that large, automated firms simply can't match.
With our headquarters in Frisco and a global support network, we bridge the gap between complex clinical procedures and the financial stability of the doctors who perform them. At NewportMed, we believe that when a practice is financially healthy, the doctors can focus entirely on their patients.
Job Summary
We are seeking a Surgical Coding & Compliance Auditor who lives for the details. In this role, you aren't just looking at codes; you are interpreting operative reports and ensuring that the story told by the surgeon matches the claim sent to the insurance company. You will be the final line of defense against audits and the primary engine for revenue integrity. Your goal is to maximize legitimate reimbursement while keeping our clients 100% compliant with federal and state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operative Report Review: Meticulously review surgical notes for orthopedic, spinal, and cardiovascular procedures to ensure all billable components are captured.
- Code Validation: Assign and/or validate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codes, ensuring proper use of modifiers (e.g., -51, -59, -22) to prevent "unbundling" errors.
- Internal Auditing: Conduct regular "spot-check" audits of the billing team's work to identify patterns of under-coding or over-coding.
- Physician Education: Prepare clear, concise feedback for surgeons. You will occasionally meet with providers to explain documentation gaps that may be impacting their revenue or compliance risk.
- Regulatory Tracking: Stay ahead of the curve on NCCI (National Correct Coding Initiative) edits and annual code changes to ensure our internal systems are updated immediately.
- Dispute Resolution: Provide the clinical and coding rationale for complex appeals, helping the RCM team win high-dollar denials.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certification Required: Current CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based). A specialty certification like CGSC (General Surgery) or COSC (Orthopedic Surgery) is highly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in surgical coding. You should be able to read an op-note and visualize the procedure.
- Technical Depth: Deep understanding of anatomy, medical terminology, and the global surgical package.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with high-level EMR/EHR platforms and auditing software.
- Soft Skills: You must be able to deliver feedback to high-performing physicians in a way that is collaborative, not confrontational.
- Integrity: A rock-solid commitment to ethical billing. We don't take shortcuts, and neither should you.
