Nestled in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood on a nine-acre campus, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL) is a leading senior services organization in Northern California, providing older adults with comprehensive and innovative care that fosters purpose, dignity, and joy. The campus houses Frank Residences assisted living and memory care, the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center, an acute geriatric psychiatric unit, and the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation.

The Controller is responsible for leading the organization's accounting, payroll, and accounts payable functions while ensuring strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and accurate financial reporting. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and plays a critical role in supporting the financial health and operational integrity of the organization.

This role oversees internal and external financial reporting, tax compliance, audit management, and accounting systems, while partnering closely with Finance leaders and department heads across Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, and related operations.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee timely and accurate monthly financial statements and variance analyses.
  • Manage core accounting functions including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, non-patient accounts receivable, and capital asset accounting.
  • Ensure proper documentation, internal controls, segregation of duties, and checks and balances across all accounting processes.
  • Monitor, review, and maintain accounting systems and financial programs to ensure operational integrity.
  • Develop and maintain reports to support budget tracking and management decision-making.

Audit, Tax & Compliance

  • Lead the annual financial audit, including preparation of deliverables, auditor coordination, and drafting audited financial statements.
  • Oversee tax compliance activities including IRS Form 990, sales tax, property tax, and other regulatory filings.
  • Support preparation and submission of Medicare, Medi-Cal, and other healthcare-related cost reports.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and healthcare regulatory requirements.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as a strategic finance partner to the CFO, senior leadership, and management team.
  • Collaborate closely with Finance colleagues including the CFO, Patient Accounting Director, and Director of Financial Planning & Analysis.
  • Partner with department leaders to identify reporting needs and deliver meaningful financial insights.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Build trust and strong working relationships across the organization.

Strategic & Special Projects

  • Support the CFO and senior leaders with financial analysis, initiatives, and special projects.
  • Drive improvements in systems, automation, and financial processes.
  • Attend Finance Committee meetings and present financial results and analyses as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field required; MBA preferred.
  • Strong GAAP expertise required; CPA certification preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, preferably in healthcare (skilled nursing and/or acute care).
  • Experience managing payroll, accounts payable, cash management, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Strong understanding of payroll rules and regulations.
  • Proven experience working with external auditors.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred; fund accounting and contribution accounting a plus.
  • Control-oriented mindset with strong attention to internal controls and process documentation.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Great Plains, Adaptive, and/or ADP strongly preferred.
  • Strong written communication skills, including preparation of financial statements and narratives.

Salary Range: $215,000 – $245,000 annually
