Overview
At Upstate Utility Services, the Utility Technician role was created to meet the evolving demands of modern utility, electrical, and communications systems.
This position bridges the gap between traditional linemen, electricians and data technicians by training multi-skilled field technicians who can operate across overhead, underground, fiber optic, electrical, and renewable energy systems.
Utility Technicians are the backbone of our private and public utility services, specializing in utility interconnections, line construction, fiber optic installations, electrical construction, and operations & maintenance (O&M) programs. They play a critical role in both new construction and the long-term reliability of customer-owned infrastructure.

Responsibilities
- Perform Field Work Safely and Efficiently - Carry out installation, maintenance, and repair tasks in a variety of environments while adhering to safety protocols and best practices.
- Adapt to Varying Job Conditions - Work across multiple types of utility systems (electrical, communications, underground, overhead) and adjust quickly to shifting priorities or site conditions.
- Troubleshoot and Solve Problems - Identify and resolve issues in the field using diagnostic tools, technical knowledge, and sound judgment.
- Maintain Accurate Digital Records - Document work performed using electronic workflows, photos, and inspection forms.
- Communicate Professionally - Coordinate with team members, supervisors, and customers to ensure clarity, efficiency, and professionalism on every job.
- Collaborate Across Disciplines - Work alongside other trades, contractors, and departments to support smooth project execution.
- Demonstrate Reliability and Readiness - Show up prepared, punctual, and equip to perform a range of tasks, often in challenging or changing environments.
- Commit to Continual Improvement - Participate in training and actively pursue skill development to grow in both technical ability and career potential.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in electrical utility, telecommunications, construction, or related fields
- Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver's license
- Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of safety standards
- Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with team members, supervisors, and clients
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced Certifications:
- OSHA 10 or 30
- Electrical License
- Fiber optic certification (FOA CFOT or equivalent) a plus, but not mandatory.
- Medium-voltage splicing/termination certifications (e.g., 3M, TE, or equivalent)
- Specialized Experience: Experience in specialized areas such as solar installations, industrial electrical systems, or high-voltage systems
- Project Management: Experience leading or managing electrical projects
- Technical Expertise: Familiarity with advanced electrical testing equipment, control systems, or PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
