Operator, Ballast Cleaner
Keep America's railways safe, stable, and moving.

Genesis Rail Services is looking for a Ballast Cleaner Operator to join our railroad maintenance team. This role is essential to maintaining the integrity of track infrastructure across the country. You will operate specialized heavy equipment, support track maintenance crews, and ensure ballast is properly cleaned, graded, and distributed to keep rail operations safe and efficient.

Pay, Work Schedule & Travel

  • Hourly pay rates start at $18.00 per hour depending on experience and skills.
  • One week on / one week off work rotation schedule
  • 100% travel —including extended stays and work near major rail corridors
  • Lodging, and meal per diem provided when travel requires over-night stay

What You'll Do

  • Operate ballast cleaning machinery (regulators, excavators, vac systems, etc.)
  • Remove debris and excess ballast to restore proper track conditions
  • Grade and distribute ballast to maintain track stability and alignment
  • Assist track crews with inspections, site prep, and maintenance tasks
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform minor mechanical repairs
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment following FRA, OSHA, and company safety standards
  • Support material placement and removal during maintenance operations
  • Follow supervisor direction and contribute to efficient, high-quality field work

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 75 lbs. routinely
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, dust)
  • Work near active railroad tracks and moving equipment
  • Stand, walk, stoop, and perform physical labor for extended periods
  • Night, weekend, and emergency work may be required based on track outages
  • 100% travel with extended overnight away from home.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Clean Motor vehicle record and clear background
  • Experience with heavy equipment (railroad, construction, or industrial preferred)
  • Basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work safely in remote or high-traffic rail environments
  • Strong teamwork, communication skills, and situational awareness
  • A safety-first mindset and the ability to follow strict U.S. rail safety protocols
