Location: This Dentist position will travel to various Wesley Health Center dental and medical clinics, as well as outreach locations throughout Los Angeles County, including traveling with the Mobile Dental Unit as needed.
Position Purpose:
This position is primarily responsible for providing Oral Screenings at JWCH medical sites, to integrate medical and dental services and to build collaborative opportunities with JWCH medical providers. The Oral Screenings consist of a preliminary visual dental exam, caries risk assessment, motivational interviewing, nutritional guidance, topical application of fluoride varnish, oral hygiene instructions, helping patients to select self-management goals for oral health improvement. This position is also responsible for providing coverage at various JWCH dental clinic sites including the Mobile Dental Unit, filling in for dental providers who are not available to work due to vacation, illness, leave of absence, or other reasons. At JWCH dental clinics and MDU, the Dentist provides preventive and comprehensive dental care consistent with the dentist's training and experience in a community health clinic setting. The position performs community outreach at various JWCH and non-JWCH sites. The Dentist will work closely with the Oral Health Team Dental Assistant, the Oral Health Team Manager, the Associate Dental Director-Community-Based and Portable Dental Programs, and the Chief Dental Officer in planning, coordinating and strategizing the implementation of Oral Health Team services at JWCH medical clinics and at various company and non-company sites.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Provides Oral Screenings, preventive services, and education to individuals and populations of all ages at various JWCH medical clinics, JWCH, and non-JWCH community outreach sites. Assignment locations will vary depending on JWCH-Oral Health Department needs.
- Provides coverage at various JWCH Dental Clinic sites and the mobile dental unit, filling in for dental providers; and examines individuals requesting care, diagnoses their dental condition, prescribes, carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate dental treatment, or refers individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines. Assignment locations will vary depending on JWCH-Oral Health Department needs.
- Prepare and deliver oral health presentations, along with potential care options, explaining benefits of good oral health to patients and their families at various sites.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned by the Chief Dental Officer.
- Helps to train dental clinic staff in the Oral Health Screening Procedures and Protocols.
- Assist patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering their questions and giving directions to patients.
- Coordinates oral health screenings at the medical and dental clinics and communicates with the medical care team to make sure screenings are accomplished and daily goals are met. 10. Maintains adequate operation of supplies and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes.
- Enters all patient encounters into the electronic dental record.
- Participates in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site.
- Insures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directives, clinic policy, as well as state and federal regulations.
- Maintains and updates skills and knowledge to appropriate professional levels with continuing education courses and educational material.
- Exercises professional judgement in the performance of services provided consistent with the organization's policies and the principles of ethics and code of conduct of the dental profession.
- Maintains Dental Department compliance, relative to Infection Exposure Control, safety, and HIPAA as required by local, State, and Federal guidelines, Dental Department directives and protocols, and clinic policies and procedures.
- Must follow the Dental Board of California Table of Dental Auxiliary Duties Delegable by Supervising Dentist.
Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited dental school.
- Current California Dental License.
- Current DEA Certificate.
- Current CPR Certification
- Effective written and oral communication.
- Comprehensive knowledge of dental techniques and procedures for all phases of specialty and general dentistry.
- Experience in working with clients and staff from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to manage short notice changes in scheduling and working site.
- Ability to travel from site to site as needed.
- Experience with NextGen/EDR or Dentrix preferred.
- Prefer bilingual English/Spanish
