Job Duties
In this role the Environmental Engineer Senior will work to protect the public health by ensuring that public drinking water is in compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Waterworks Regulations. The Engineer will supervises or leads engineering functions for an assigned regional area or office. They serves as a subject matter expert providing technical and procedural guidance and expertise to other staff. Characteristics include establishing priorities and assigning work, auditing and approving other engineers' work, participates in engineering design evaluation for new waterworks or waterworks considering modification, monitoring new and improved facilities, conducting non-routine and final inspections, as well as interpreting regulations for owners, operators, local government, engineering consultants, and other staff. Performs routine sanitary surveys and provides technical assistance to surface water treatment plants and systems. Additionally they will evaluate and recommend revisions to local, state, or national regulations, facilitates implementation of regulations, supervises preparation of reports and provides training and technical assistance to other staff and the public. Most activities are handled independently with supervision required only for very large projects or the most complex issues.
This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by PWSS (Public Water System Supervision Grant) for a year ending June 30th, 2026. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of and applied experience in biology, microbiology, chemistry, core engineering principles, and quantitative analysis.
- Established experience in exercising sound judgement and making well-informed engineering decisions.
- Experience in conveying technical information clearly, engage with different audiences, and preparing comprehensive technical reports.
- Proven experience in interpreting, analyzing, and applying applicable laws, regulations, policies, and complex technical documentation.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to effectively manage and develop professional staff.
- Comprehensive engineering expertise in water-related disciplines, including civil, sanitary, environmental, or chemical engineering.
Additional Considerations
- Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) in Virginia preferred.
